His Girlfriend Asked If He’d Still Take Their Trip If She Were Arrested at the Airport — Reddit Focused on One Detail
The couple had been dating six months when she said she had old warrants and asked what he would do if she couldn’t make the trip.

A trip to a family wedding turned into a much bigger relationship question after one man said his girlfriend asked what he would do if she were arrested at the airport.
In a post shared to Reddit’s AITAH community, the 34-year-old poster said he and his 29-year-old girlfriend had been dating for six months and were planning to fly from Detroit to Washington, D.C., for his cousin’s wedding in June. He said he had booked the itinerary in April.
Then, about a month before the trip, she reportedly discovered she had outstanding warrants from the past few years.
“She discovered that she has warrants from over the past few years,” he wrote, adding that she said she “doesn’t remember the charges.”
The poster said he told her he was concerned she might not be able to board the flight if the warrants were still active. According to him, she said she would handle them before the trip.
Then came the question that sent Reddit into full group-chat mode: Would he still get on the plane if she were arrested at the airport?
He said yes.
“I responded that I would continue to board the flight as it is her responsibility as an adult to have things in place & and we are not a married couple,” he wrote. “Am I wrong?”

Reddit Was Less Worried About the Flight Than the Warrants
Most commenters sided with the poster on the actual travel question. A cousin’s wedding is a family event, the relationship is still fairly new, and the girlfriend had time to address the issue before the trip.
One commenter put it bluntly: “Family wedding beats new girlfriend. If it were a couple’s trip, then of course you skip, but it’s not. Easy decision.”
Another wrote, “You have every right to board your flight. Especially if she failed to handle her business.”
But the bigger reaction was not really about whether he should board the plane. It was about the phrase “doesn’t remember the charges.”
“Who tf has warrants but doesn’t ‘remember’ the charges??” one commenter asked. “Someone who is lying to you.”
Another person said, “I got arrested exactly once in my life, 22 years ago. I still remember EXACTLY what happened and why I was arrested.”
A third commenter pointed out that an unknown warrant can happen, but argued this situation sounded different: “Not knowing there is a warrant out on you is one thing. Knowing there are multiple warrants out on you and conveniently not knowing what they are about is another.”
Some Commenters Said Warrants Aren’t Always Dramatic
To be fair, not everyone jumped straight to worst-case scenarios. A few commenters said people can end up with warrants over surprisingly minor issues, including old tickets, clerical mistakes, missed court dates, or paperwork sent to an old address.
One person shared that they once had a warrant related to a jet ski violation that had already been dismissed years earlier, writing, “The cop literally was laughing as he handcuffed me.”

Another commenter, who described themselves as a former Chicago prosecutor, said many warrants they saw were tied to minor violations where people didn’t realize they still needed to appear in court even after paying a fine.
That nuance did shift the conversation a bit. A warrant alone does not automatically mean someone has done something serious. Several people said the issue was the combination of multiple warrants, her apparent lack of detail, and the timing of the question.
As one commenter put it, “The warrant itself isn’t the problem. People get BS warrants all the time… What’s weird is knowing you have a warrant and not knowing what it’s for.”
The Six-Month Relationship Detail Did Not Help Her Case
The length of the relationship also came up again and again.
The poster said they had only been dating for six months, which made many readers less sympathetic to the idea that he should skip his cousin’s wedding if she failed to resolve the warrants in time.
One commenter wrote, “6 months is not long enough to put your whole life or plans on hold for a whole grown a** person that won’t take care of their own crap.”
Another said, “NTA, but 6 months isn’t worth someone with open warrants. Rethink your priorities my dude.”
Several commenters also wondered why the girlfriend seemed to be turning the situation into a loyalty test instead of focusing on clearing up the warrants before the trip.
One person asked, “You’re just going to let the warrants slide and let her make this a loyalty test for YOU?!”

The Thread Turned Into a Red Flag Festival
As often happens on Reddit, the comments got colorful fast.
One person wrote that the situation was “screaming ‘red flags,’” while another upgraded it to “MARINARA FLAGS.” That led to an entire side conversation about alternative red-sauce-themed warning signs, because apparently Reddit can turn even outstanding warrants into a pasta debate.
There were also plenty of jokes about protecting his wallet, freezing his credit, and making sure she didn’t have access to his house while he was gone.
Still, buried under the jokes was a fairly consistent point: commenters thought the poster had every right to attend his cousin’s wedding, but many felt he was asking the wrong question.
The issue, in their view, wasn’t just whether he should board the plane if she got arrested. It was why his girlfriend had multiple unresolved warrants, why she said she didn’t remember what they were for, and why this was all coming up a month before a family trip.
Or, as one commenter summed it up: “NTA for the specific question you asked, but YTA for continuing to date a woman who has warrants (plural) out for her arrest for crimes she ‘doesn’t remember.’”

Woah
Family first so I’d board the flight too… massive red flag that she doesn’t remember what the warrants are for lol nobody forgets something like that!
hate hypothetical questions such as that.
That’s a pretty good question
Thanks for sharing this story.
Honestly, the airport question feels less important than why there are multiple warrants in the first place.
That would be an out for me.
This is an interesting dilema. I’d NOT want to go AT ALL unless I was POSITIVE my partner had taken care of the warrant!
