I’m Not a Racing Fan, but This Wisconsin Racetrack Made Me Want to Plan a Race Weekend
Road America in Elkhart Lake has go-karts, UTVs, walking nights, disc golf, food, and a more relaxed setup than I expected.
I had pretty much written off Road America for years.
Not because I thought it looked bad. I just assumed it was really for people who already knew racing. People who followed drivers and knew the difference between race weekends, and could say intelligent things about cars beyond, “That one looks fast.”
That is not me.

Road America is a 14-turn, 4.048-mile road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, a small village in Sheboygan County. It is one of the big reasons people know Elkhart Lake in the first place, especially if they follow motorsports.
I did not grow up watching races, and I do not know much about cars. Even though I live close enough to Elkhart Lake to visit easily, I never felt much urgency to go. I figured Road America was one of those places I would only appreciate if I already understood the sport.
After finally spending time there, I had it wrong.
What Changed My Mind
The easy answer is that I had a lot more fun than I expected. The better answer is that Road America was not the sit-in-one-spot-and-hope-you-care experience I had pictured.
Before visiting, I imagined a race weekend as a lot of sitting around in the heat, trying to follow something I did not fully understand. I thought it would feel more like a stadium day.
It doesn’t.

Road America is huge, and you are not locked into one view all day. You can move around, watch from different spots, and actually get a feel for the property. That made the whole place feel a lot more approachable to me.
It also helped me understand why people build entire weekends around it instead of just showing up for a couple of hours.
The Go-Karts and UTVs Were an Easy Way In
Getting to drive the go-karts was enough to win me over. I would absolutely go back just to do those again. They go up to 40 miles per hour, which is fast enough to make me briefly think I should get into racing, haha.

The UTVs were another surprise. I got to drive one, and it was way more fun than I pictured. The suspension on those things is wild, and the whole off-road experience was much more exciting than I expected from something I had barely thought about before arriving.

That is what changed my mind about Road America. I did not need to become a racing expert before I could enjoy it. I just needed an easy way in.
Road America has those entry points. Public karting is available on select race weekends, and the off-road UTV experience can be booked separately through Road America. Those are the kinds of activities that make the track feel less intimidating for someone who is curious but not ready to commit to a full race weekend right away.

What I’d Want to Know Before a First Visit
The biggest thing I would want people to know is that Road America does not feel like a typical assigned-seat sporting event. You can bring a chair or blanket, pick your own viewing area, and move around the property. There are bleachers in some areas, but you do not have to stay planted in one spot all day.
The property is also big. Really big. Golf cart rentals make a lot of sense for race weekends, especially if you want to cover more ground without wearing yourself out. Bringing a bike also sounds smart. After seeing the scale of the place, I would absolutely think about comfort and mobility before coming back for a full day.

I’d also pack like I was spending the day outside. A chair, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and a cooler would all be on my list.
The food situation was better than I expected, too. They have a ton of options, and Parker John’s is on-site, and I already know I like them because there is one near me. Their barbecue is excellent, which is not what I expected to be saying about racetrack food!
There’s Plenty to Do Beyond Race Weekends
Another thing I had not realized is that Road America has a lot going on outside of the major race weekends.
There’s 4 Miles of Fitness, where people can walk, run, or bike the track on select evenings. There’s also disc golf, geocaching, Cars & Coffee, Morning Drive events, Sunset Cruises, karting, motorcycle events, camping, and other programming throughout the season.

That surprised me almost as much as the track itself. Road America has a serious motorsports reputation, and it deserves it. But it also has enough going on that you do not need to show up as a die-hard racing fan to find something you’d actually enjoy.
That was my biggest mental block before visiting. I thought I needed to care more about racing before I could enjoy Road America. Being there made me care more.
Why I’m Planning to Go Back
At this point, I do want to experience a full race weekend there.
Now that I understand the setup better, it sounds much more like something I would enjoy instead of something I would try once just to say I did it. I want to bring a chair, move around the property, eat barbecue, settle in at a few different viewing spots, and see what the place feels like when the whole track is alive.
I still cannot give you an educated breakdown of racing classes, drivers, or which weekend is best for a first-timer. I am not going to pretend one visit turned me into a motorsports expert.
But Road America was much more beginner-friendly than I expected, and it made me want to come back and do it properly.
For someone who thought this place probably wasn’t for me, that is a pretty big shift.
Road America is also only part of why Elkhart Lake is worth visiting. I also put together a full Elkhart Lake weekend guide with the lake, spa, wine tasting, pottery, cheese, golf, restaurants, and places to stay if you want to turn Road America into a full getaway instead of just a day trip.
If you’ve been to Road America before, especially for a race weekend, tell me which event I should put on my calendar first. I clearly have some catching up to do.

It’s been a long time since I visited Wisconsin. This makes me want to go back.
