People are sharing the under-$30 purchases that made daily life easier. These 10 are actually useful

Redditors shared the cheap purchases they wish they’d bought sooner, and quite a few of them are incredibly practical.

I love a cheap purchase that fixes a stupidly annoying problem.

Recently, I came across an AskReddit thread asking people, “What purchase under $30 solved a problem you didn’t realize was draining you?” There were thousands of answers, and I ended up finding quite a few ideas I really liked.

Here are some of the other suggestions that stood out along with a couple of my own favorite products.

iDesign Mesh Laundry Bags with Built in Zipper for Cleaning Delicates– Set of 2, 1 Medium and 1 Large Bag, White

Mesh laundry bags

I use these mesh garment bags for bras, sweaters, underwear, and anything else I don’t want getting stretched, snagged, or tangled up in the wash. They’re cheap, and I use them almost every time I do laundry.

Someone in the thread mentioned keeping “a Zippable laundry bag for socks,” which is basically the same idea.

I’ve never used one just for socks, but I can see the appeal. Keeping them together from hamper to washer would probably save a few from disappearing along the way.

Universal Travel Adapter USB C, All in One Worldwide Plug Adapter, Black | Fast Charge GaN PD3.0, Type C USB-A Quick Charging, International Wall Charger

A universal travel adapter

Mine was around $13 on Amazon, and it stays in my travel bag.

I’ve taken it on trips all over the world, and I like not having to think about which plug style I’ll need before every trip. I bring the same adapter and use whichever setting matches the outlet.

It doesn’t convert voltage, though, so I still check before plugging in things like hair tools.

An extra-long charging cable

One Redditor called a long charging cable “not glamorous,” but said “half the tiny annoyances around beds, airports, couches and bad outlets disappear.”

Hotel outlets are so often nowhere near where you want them. I’d rather have too much cord than be stretching my phone across a nightstand or leaving it on the floor.

A toiletry bag that stays packed

One commenter keeps duplicates of deodorant, toothpaste, nail clippers, and other basics in their travel toiletry bag instead of packing everything again for every trip.

I do this with quite a few travel-size toiletries, and it saves me some packing time. Things I use on every trip can just stay in the bag instead of getting moved back and forth from my bathroom.

GORILLA GRIP Patented Fitted Bed Sheet Holders for Corners, 4 Pack White | Adjustable Elastic Fasteners with Straps with Metal Clips, Keeps in Place Bedding

Sheet garters

“I move a lot when I sleep and I used to have to fix the sheets every day,” one commenter wrote. An $8 set of sheet garters apparently stopped the fitted sheet from moving.

I had completely forgotten these existed. They clip underneath the mattress and keep the corners of the fitted sheet from popping off, which sounds useful if you’re constantly fixing yours.

Blackout curtains

Several people mentioned blackout curtains, including one person who said they also helped keep a south-facing room cooler during summer.

Another commenter suggested adding blackout panels behind curtains you already own instead of replacing them.

I’ve stayed in enough hotels with really good blackout curtains to understand why people love them. A truly dark room is a lot nicer than waking up with sunlight pouring in around the edges at 6 a.m.

BLACK+DECKER 6-Cup Rice Cooker with Steaming Basket | Cooks up to 6 cups of rice with automatic keep warm, steaming basket and removable nonstick bowl.

A cheap rice cooker

One Redditor paid about $25 for a rice cooker and liked being able to add everything, press a button, and “don’t think about it until it’s ready to eat.”

Another person pointed out that rice itself isn’t difficult to cook, but handing that part of dinner off to a machine frees you up to focus on whatever else you’re making.

I actually bought a cheap rice cooker a while back and then let it sit unused for quite some time. When I finally did use it, it turned out to be defective and nearly started a fire. (This is the one I had for reference.) I’ve reverted to instant ice for the time being, but may have to give another rice cooker brand a go!

barsone Silicone Spatula Set 3Pcs, Mini Jar Scraper for Makeup & Food | Mini spatulas reach every last drop in jars and bottles, reducing waste for food

Tiny silicone spatulas for beauty products

One Redditor said they use “tiny long handled silicone spatulas” to scrape out skincare and beauty products and can sometimes get another week or more out of a container.

This is one I would actually use. I’ve cut open tubes of moisturizer before to get the last bit out, especially when the product was expensive. A little spatula would be a much cleaner way to do it.

Storage bins

One commenter said storage bins helped because they “didn’t realize how much visual clutter was draining me until everything actually had a place.”

I’m not especially organized by nature, so I’m never going to pretend a few bins will magically fix that. But I do like having somewhere specific to put things that otherwise end up sitting out on counters or getting shoved into a random drawer.

Antaha Handheld Vacuum Cordless - Car Vacuum Cleaner with 11000Pa Powerful Suction,1.2lbs Lightweight, Type-C Charge, Multiple Accessories, Portable Hand

A small hand vacuum

“It’s a pain in the *** to get out the whole vacuum rig just to get some dust under the shelves,” one Redditor wrote, so they bought a hand vacuum.

I get this. There are plenty of small messes I’d clean up immediately with a hand vacuum that I’m much more likely to ignore if it means dragging out the full-size one.

And yes, there’s something slightly dangerous about reading a thread full of cheap purchases. Thirty dollars doesn’t sound like much until you suddenly want six different things.
