Americans Forgot These Things While Traveling in 2025 — and They’re Not Making the Same Mistakes in 2026

From forgotten chargers to packing mistakes, travelers say 2025 taught them what not to do next time.

If there’s one thing Americans proved in 2025, it’s that travel was very much back, even if a few phone chargers were left behind along the way.

According to a new survey of 2,000 frequent travelers conducted by Talker Research on behalf of CheapCaribbean Vacations, the average American spent $2,261 on travel last year and visited three new places. Most trips were closer to home, lower stress, and focused on reconnecting, but they weren’t without their regrets.

From forgotten essentials to lessons learned the hard way, here’s what travelers say 2025 taught them, and what they plan to do differently in 2026.

The Things Travelers Forgot — and Definitely Regretted

Packing mishaps were one of the most common frustrations of the year. Despite best intentions, travelers admitted they repeatedly left behind basic essentials.

The most forgotten item in 2025? Phone chargers, with 15% of travelers realizing too late that theirs was still sitting at home. Sunscreen followed close behind at 14%, a mistake many likely noticed the hard way. Headphones (13%), toothbrushes (10%), and even medication (5%) also made the list.

More concerning: 3% of respondents said they forgot passports or IDs entirely; these are the kind of mistakes that can derail a trip before it even starts.

It’s no surprise, then, that “pack lighter — but smarter” emerged as one of the year’s most common takeaways.

The Lessons Travelers Say They’re Taking Forward

While 2025 travel left most people feeling relaxed, grateful, and refreshed, it also came with a few hard-earned lessons.

The biggest one? Take more photos. Sixteen percent of travelers said they wished they’d documented their trips better, especially the everyday moments that are easy to overlook. Others said they regretted not saying yes to more spontaneous plans or waiting too long to book.

Planning earlier, packing lighter, and being more flexible all ranked high among the year’s biggest takeaways.

Why 2026 Is Shaping Up to Be Even Bigger

Despite the missteps, confidence is high heading into the new year. Seventy-six percent of respondents said they’re very confident they’ll travel more in 2026.

As Americans rethink how they travel after the lessons of 2025, new data shows they’re also spending more on trips in 2026 — with Caribbean vacations surging in popularity. At the same time, travelers are openly sharing the destinations they’d never visit again, sparking heated debate over which trips are actually worth the time and money.
