He Asked His Wife to Wear Contacts to a Work Party — and She’s Still Upset Weeks Later

A Reddit user is facing serious backlash after asking his wife to swap her glasses for contact lenses before attending his company’s holiday party. What he framed as a “gentle” request quickly turned into a full-blown internet reckoning about autonomy, attraction, and why glasses are not, in fact, a fashion failure.

According to the post, the man explained that his workplace hosted a “fairly fancy” Christmas party where employees could bring their partners. His wife dressed appropriately for the occasion — except she wore her glasses instead of contact lenses. He asked if she would “mind” putting in contacts “just for the night,” saying she typically does so for special occasions or sports.

She declined. And weeks later, she’s still upset.

So he turned to Reddit, asking if he was in the wrong.

The overwhelming response: Yes. Unequivocally.

“You’ve Now Told Her You Don’t Like Her as She Is”

Commenters didn’t mince words. Many zeroed in on the implication behind the request — that glasses somehow made his wife less attractive, less polished, or less acceptable for a professional setting.

One commenter wrote:

“The fact you even have to ask if YTA is astounding. One million times, yes. You have now told her you do not like her as she is.”

Another added bluntly:

“I like my wife better with contacts and I don’t want work colleagues to see her with glasses. Fixed it for you.”

Others pointed out that glasses are a medical device, not an accessory to be swapped out for aesthetics.

“What events do you think people don’t need vision correction?” one person asked. “Of course people will have glasses. People like to see.”

Contacts Aren’t ‘Just’ an Option for Everyone

A recurring theme in the comments was something the original poster appeared to overlook: contacts aren’t comfortable, or even possible, for many people.

Multiple commenters shared personal experiences of struggling with dry eyes, astigmatism, chemotherapy side effects, or years of failed attempts at wearing lenses.

One wrote:

“Putting lenses in when your eyes are tired feels like putting razor blades in.”

Another added:

“I wore contacts for 25 years and eventually was told I could only wear them once in a blue moon. Get over yourself.”

Several commenters also noted that choosing contacts for sports doesn’t mean someone wants to wear them for hours at a formal event – especially with makeup, bright lights, and late nights involved.

Glasses Are Not a Dress Code Violation

A large chunk of the outrage stemmed from one simple question: Since when are glasses inappropriate for a fancy event?

“You act like she was trying to wear jeans and a hoodie to a black-tie event,” one commenter said.

Others pointed out the double standard, wondering whether the husband would question male coworkers for wearing glasses – or if this expectation was reserved exclusively for his wife.

One person summed it up neatly:

“This is your work party. She’s there to support you, not to be visually optimized for your colleagues.”

The Minority Opinion (Yes, There Was One)

Not everyone thought the man deserved internet exile. A small group argued that asking, not demanding, wasn’t inherently malicious.

One commenter said:

“He asked if she would mind. He didn’t berate her or force her. People saying they’d divorce him are wild.”

Still, even those commenters acknowledged that wording, intent, and awareness mattered – and that once she said no, the conversation should have ended.

The Verdict: Stay in Your Lane

If the comments section is any indication, the internet sees this less as a fashion disagreement and more as a trust issue. Many felt the request crossed a line – not because of the contacts themselves, but because of what the request implied.

As one commenter put it:

“As her husband, it should have been: ‘You look beautiful. Should we go?’”

And honestly? That’s probably the takeaway.

In another recent viral moment, a holiday white elephant gift exchange also sparked debate after one participant had very high expectations and didn’t take the joke gift he received particularly well. The internet, unsurprisingly, had plenty to say. Check out more posts like this below…

A holiday white elephant exchange is supposed to be a little ridiculous and mildly competitive in the “I will absolutely steal that candle warmer” kind of way. But one person walked into a $25 gift swap expecting the usual mix of fun and useful… and walked out very disappointed.
