Inside the Viral ‘SOS’ House Mystery That Had TikTok Calling the Cops
TikTok users thought someone was trapped inside a boarded-up Plainfield house. The real explanation appears to be a lot less sinister.

What started as a creepy late-night drive-by turned into a full-blown internet mystery, and then, finally, a very normal explanation.
A boarded-up house in Plainfield, Illinois, went viral after TikTok users @extraordinaryjoseph and @jake.l..owens posted videos of its porch lights blinking in a pattern many viewers were convinced looked like an SOS distress signal. Their clips racked up millions of views, with people zooming in on the boarded windows, the lack of visible activity, and the steady flash of the lights. Some were sure someone inside was begging for help; others broke down the pattern and argued over whether it was “real” Morse code.
@jake.l..owens SOS in Morse code! An abandoned property in Plainfield, IL flashes SOS. This property appears abandoned with boarded up windows and doors… from the inside. It’s surprising it would even have electricity… let alone flash SOS Concerned, we contacted the police. They went to a parking lot across the busy street, said they didn’t see anything, didn’t know Morse code, and would not investigate the property. With further investigation—including other witnesses, it appears these SOS lights have been happening at this property at least for a few months across 1-3 lights on the house: front porch to the right, side, and back porch. Some people have seen packages delivered there and disappeared. Some people have heard Plainfield Police and Fire Departments use the house for training (but why wouldn’t they say that when contacted?). Others said the property is under renovations (hense the boarded up windows and doors from the inside) and the light is to scare trespassers (but why would a property currently up for COMMERCIAL sale for 6.7 million be under house renovation?) At the minimum, it is creepy… at the worst, something horrific is happening… and at the very least, we would hope the authorities would investigate and/or communicate what is going on. If nothing is going on, please don’t use an SOS setting for your lights… HOPEFULLY we got concerned over nothing, but just want to make sure people are safe
The concern didn’t stay online. According to NBC Chicago, both Plainfield police and the Will County Sheriff’s Office were called out to the property multiple times. Officers said they found no signs anyone was in immediate danger, and later confirmed the home was locked, boarded up, and appeared unoccupied.
Even so, the videos kept circulating until the family behind the property stepped in themselves.
In a series of TikToks, daughter Isabelle Czwodzinski and her dad, Wally, filmed a walkthrough of the house, unlocking the front door and showing largely empty rooms that had more evidence of past vandalism than any secret captive. They also took down the blinking fixtures and demonstrated that the porch lights were small, solar-powered units that were simply malfunctioning and stuck in a flashing mode that, unfortunately, looked a lot like a distress signal to the internet.

Once the mystery was solved, the family leaned into the bizarre fame instead of running from it. They put two of the now-infamous solar lights up for auction and directed the proceeds to Habitat for Humanity, turning a viral scare into a small win for charity.
In the end, there was no trapped victim, no hidden crime, just dying solar lights, a boarded-up property, and a reminder that, for all the wild theories social media can spin up, a lot of people really do pick up the phone when they think someone might be in trouble.
And if you’re the type who loves a slightly spooky story with a real-world twist, you can go even further down the rabbit hole: there’s a viral roadside encounter where a driver says he saw a 7-foot-tall figure standing in the middle of the road, plus a deep dive into which U.S. cities rack up the most reported ghost sightings for anyone who wants to plan a haunted-themed getaway.
