She Told Her Boyfriend to Either Move In or Stop Coming Over — and It Backfired Fast

She asked him to either move in officially or stop coming over so much. Instead, he accused her of cheating…and the internet had a lot to say about it.

Woman and man having fight at home

At 19, she thought she had a pretty straightforward situation with her boyfriend. They’d been together for over a year, and while they didn’t live together, he was at her apartment constantly…sleeping over, using her utilities, and helping himself to whatever was in the fridge.

But when she asked him to either make it official and contribute or start spending less time there, things escalated quickly.

Now, after sharing her story online, thousands of people are weighing in, and many think she’s not actually asking the right question.

“He was basically there every day”

In her post on Reddit, she explained that her boyfriend had gradually become a daily presence in her apartment. What started as regular visits turned into something that looked a lot like living together, just without any of the responsibility.

“He has his own apartment… but he’s at mine almost every day,” she wrote.

That included eating food she paid for, drinking multiple sodas a day, and using utilities she covered on her own. Over time, it started to bother her, not just financially, but because it felt unbalanced.

So she brought it up.

She gave him two options—and he didn’t like either

Instead of letting the situation continue, she told him she needed things to change.

Either he could move in officially and contribute to rent and bills, or he needed to stop coming over so frequently.

“He got upset,” she said, explaining that he refused to move in because he didn’t want to give up his own apartment—but also didn’t want to stop spending so much time at hers.

That’s when the argument took a turn.

He accused her of cheating—and reminded her he had a key

According to her update, things escalated after she stood her ground.

He told her she must be “hiding something” if she didn’t want him over as much—and even brought up the fact that he already had a key to her place.

That shifted the tone of the entire situation.

What started as a disagreement about boundaries suddenly became a lot more serious.

Reddit thinks she’s focusing on the wrong issue

The response online was immediate…and blunt.

Many commenters pointed out that this wasn’t really about whether he should move in. It was about the fact that he was already acting like he lived there, just without contributing anything.

“He doesn’t want to move in because then he’d have to pay,” one person wrote.

Another put it more directly: “He wants all the benefits of living with you and none of the responsibility.”

Several people also focused on the key, urging her to take that seriously.

“Change the lock, change the boyfriend,” one commenter said.

Others saw it as a bigger boundary problem

Beyond the financial side, a lot of people were more concerned about how he reacted when she tried to set a reasonable boundary.

Instead of having a conversation, he jumped to accusations and tried to turn it back on her.

“That’s not a misunderstanding—that’s manipulation,” one commenter wrote.

Another added, “You’re not asking too much. You’re asking for basic fairness.”

By the end of the thread, most people agreed she was not being unreasonable at all, if anything, she was finally calling out a situation that had already gotten way too comfortable for him and way too unfair for her.
