Online dating can be a gamble, but depending on where you live, the odds might actually be stacked more in your favor.

PrivacyJournal’s 2025 study analyzed romance scam reports, fraud, identity theft, violent crime, STD rates, and the number of registered sex offenders to figure out which states give online daters the safest shot at finding love.

Here are the 10 safest states for online dating this year, starting from #10 and working our way to the very best.

10. Connecticut

Connecticut makes it into the top 10 thanks to one standout stat: the fourth-lowest number of registered sex offenders in the country. Fraud and identity theft reports aren’t great here, but overall, Connecticut’s scores in violent crime and STDs keep it safely inside the top tier.

9. Hawaii

Not just paradise for beaches and sunsets – Hawaii ranks well in online dating safety too. The state performs strongly in identity theft and fraud categories, though higher STD rates hold it back from climbing higher. Still, it’s a solid place to swipe without as much worry.

8. North Dakota

North Dakota’s numbers for fraud and identity theft are among the lowest nationwide, which helped secure its spot at #8. Violent crime is a little higher than you might expect for such a sparsely populated state, but the overall picture is still much safer than most.

7. Idaho

Idaho shines for its low STD rates and better-than-average scores in fraud and identity theft. However, a higher number of registered sex offenders compared to the other top states keeps it out of the very top five.

Safe Midwestern vibes give Nebraska its ranking. Fraud and violent crime numbers are lower than the majority of states, while identity theft rates are also on the safer side. With consistent scores across categories, Nebraska earns its reputation as a dependable place to date online.

5. Kentucky

Kentucky is the South’s strongest entry in the top 10. It scores especially well for low fraud and romance scam reports. On the flip side, the state has a relatively high number of registered sex offenders — but its performance in the other categories balances things out enough for a fifth-place finish.

4. Iowa

Iowa stands out for its exceptionally low fraud and identity theft numbers, some of the best in the nation. That alone makes it appealing for online daters looking for less chance of being conned. Violent crime rates are higher than the Northeast states, but still low enough to land Iowa in the top five.

3. New Hampshire

New Hampshire didn’t take any first-place spots, but it scores consistently well across key categories. It’s second in the nation for low STD rates and third for low violent crime reports. Fraud and scam numbers aren’t its strongest suit, but they’re not enough to drag it out of the top three.

2. Maine

Maine is officially the safest state in the country when it comes to violent crime — just 103 reports per 100,000 residents. Add to that strong scores for low STDs and identity theft, and you’ve got a state that makes online dating a lot less risky. Scam reports are a weak point here, but not enough to knock it down too far.

1. Vermont

The Green Mountain State claims the crown for safest online dating in 2025. Vermont ranks first for the lowest STD rates and second for identity theft. Its small, older population likely plays a role in those low numbers. The only soft spot? Romance scams. Even so, Vermont’s consistently strong performance across all other categories makes it the #1 safest state for online daters.
