A new analysis found that average Uber fares for a 30-minute ride are lowest in a handful of Midwestern and Southern states, with some coming in just above $30.

Uber prices can swing a lot depending on where you are, and a new state-by-state analysis found the gap is bigger than plenty of riders probably realize. According to new data from Sweepstakes Table, the average cost of a 30-minute Uber ride varies by more than $20 across the U.S.

This ranking focuses on the states where those rides cost the least. Researchers looked at average Uber pricing data for a 30-minute trip in all 50 states, then compared those fares with local median hourly wages to measure affordability more broadly.

10. Arizona

Arizona rounds out the list, with an average 30-minute Uber ride costing $32.84. It is still noticeably cheaper than what riders are paying in the country’s most expensive states, where the same trip can climb past $50.

The study also found that Arizona performs well when wages are factored in, with an affordability score of 143.30% of median hourly earnings.

9. Mississippi

In Mississippi, a 30-minute Uber ride averages $32.81. That makes it one of the cheapest states by raw price alone.

There is a catch, though. Mississippi stood out as an outlier in this group because its affordability score came in at 182.00%, much higher than the others on this list. In other words, the rides are cheap, but they still take a bigger bite out of local paychecks than you might expect.

8. Tennessee

Tennessee takes the eighth spot, with an average 30-minute Uber ride costing $32.73.

Its affordability score landed at 155.30%, which is still on the lower end nationally, even if it is not quite as favorable as some of the states ranked above it.

7. North Carolina

North Carolina came in seventh, where the average 30-minute ride costs $32.39.

That puts it in a very tight pricing cluster with Illinois and Iowa. The study found North Carolina’s affordability score sits at 148.20% of median hourly earnings.

6. Illinois

Illinois also posted an average 30-minute Uber fare of $32.39, tying North Carolina on raw price.

It is one of the more interesting entries here because even with Chicago in the mix, Illinois still ranked among the cheapest states for Uber rides. Its affordability score was an even stronger 138.20%.

5. Iowa

In Iowa, the average cost of a 30-minute Uber ride is $32.37.

The state also performed well on the wage-adjusted side of the study, with an affordability score of 144.90%, helping it hold onto a top-five spot.

4. Oklahoma

Oklahoma ranks fourth, with an average fare of $31.54 for a 30-minute Uber ride.

Its affordability score came in at 158.20%. That is a little higher than some others in this group, but the raw fare is still among the lowest in the country.

3. Texas

Texas landed in third place, with an average 30-minute Uber ride costing $30.86.

It also ranked well on affordability, with the trip equaling 139.60% of median hourly wages. That combination helped Texas stand out as one of the better-value states for ride-hailing overall.

2. Utah

Utah came in second, with an average fare of $30.71 for a 30-minute ride.

It also had the best affordability score in the entire study at 135.90%, meaning riders there spend a smaller share of their hourly earnings on Uber than anywhere else in the U.S.

1. Indiana

Indiana took the top spot as the least expensive state for a 30-minute Uber ride, with an average fare of $30.35.

That was the lowest raw price in the analysis. Its affordability score of 138.90% was also among the strongest in the country, making Indiana the clear winner for riders looking for the cheapest average fares.
