Will Your Winter Be Mild or Brutal? Farmers’ Almanac Releases Its U.S. Winter Forecast for 2025–2026

Get ready for a winter with plenty of twists and turns.

The Farmers’ Almanac has released its winter weather forecast for 2025–2026, and while the specifics vary by region, the overall theme is a season of dramatic swings.

The Almanac, which has been publishing long-range weather predictions for more than 200 years, is calling for widespread wintry weather, including notable cold snaps and plenty of snow in certain parts of the country. And although winter doesn’t officially start until December 21, cold and snow could make an early appearance in some areas—possibly as soon as September.

Where the Cold Will Hit Hardest

The coldest outbreaks are expected from the Northern Plains to New England, with another frigid pocket predicted for the Northwest, especially Idaho and Washington. Two major cold snaps—one in mid-January and another in mid-February—could have much of the country shivering.

Snow Lovers, Take Note

Here’s how the forecast shapes up for different regions:

  • Northeast & New England: Frequent snowstorms should keep winter sports fans happy.
  • Mid-Atlantic: Snow mixed with rain, with mountain areas seeing the most accumulation.
  • Great Lakes & North Central States: A “classic winter wonderland” with frequent snow events.
  • Pacific Northwest: Heavy mountain snowfall in the forecast.
  • Southeast: Average temperatures with plenty of wet weather; northern areas (especially the Appalachians) may see occasional snow.
  • Texas & Southern Plains: Wetter than average with periodic cold snaps; snow will be limited, but freezing rain could be an issue.
  • Southwest: Wet winter with near-average temperatures.

A Forecast With a Following

While the Farmers’ Almanac isn’t meant to replace your local forecast, its blend of long-range predictions and nature-based hints has kept readers intrigued for generations. Many swear by its accuracy—others simply enjoy the mix of science, tradition, and seasonal anticipation.

If the 2025–2026 prediction pans out, much of the country could be in for a true snow-globe winter, complete with postcard-perfect scenes, chilly mornings, and a whole lot of shoveling.
