However, while learning new things, some words get stuck in my mind because of their spelling or pronunciation. For instance, at first glance, some comments may seem misspelled, but they have been used the way they seem. People have shared online some of such words that they thought were wrong, but they were accurate.

Ophthalmologist

It’s a medical term that seems complex. A woman shared that she read it in the medical report of her friend and wasn’t able to pronounce it correctly at first. Out of curiosity, she googled it and found that it just appeared complex; the meaning and origin of this word weren’t that difficult to understand.

Gauge

This was one of the most common answers. One commenter said, “My trucks fuel gauge was labeled “Fuel Gage”. Ford had a typo.”

Forty

Another popular answer was “forty.” One person said, “I always want to spell it FOURTY.”

Segue

Segue means to move without interruption from one piece of music or scene to another in music or film.

Judgment 

“Judgment begs for an e in the middle,” stated one person. Another responded, “I just had to go google it because I didn’t believe there wasn’t one. I guess I’ve just been spelling it wrong my whole life lol.”

Queue

It simply refers to a line of people or things in an order. A woman shared her opinion that it resembles cue, and she always confused these two while studying. Another said, “For such a civilized word, it’s so obnoxious..” Another person quipped, “When you speak it, you only pronounce the first letter. The rest are all patiently waiting in line for their turn.”

Colonel

Pronounced as ‘kur-nul,’ this word is also confusing. One person stated regarding the spelling and pronunciation of colonel, “It makes no sense!”

Camaraderie

Camaraderie comes from French camarade, which is also the source of English’s comrade, meaning “friend or associate.”

Chaos

The word refers to a disorder or confusing situation. A man shared his feedback about this word. He said the spelling of this word doesn’t feel correct as the sound of ‘ch’ is the same as the sound of ‘k.’He accepted the diversity of the English language and the difference in spelling according to the regional changes.

Gnome

A student shared her surprise that the ‘g’ at the start of this word is silent. He also shared that he was curious about the meaning and the reason behind the specific spelling of this word. It came to his knowledge that it’s a Latin word, and due to its abbreviation and specific meaning, it’s used this way.

Entrepreneur

 The origin of this word is French. And the pronunciation of this word doesn’t go with the spelling. A girl shared that she was confused about why it doesn’t start with an ‘o’ as it’s spoken. She was surprised to know the spelling and found it a bit difficult to remember.

Mnemonic

The combination of m and n at the start seems misspelled. Mnemonic means a device such as a pattern of letters, ideas, or associations that assists in remembering something.

Wednesday

One of the most common is correct but wrong-looking words. A man shared that in all his childhood, he has been trying to remember the spelling. For instance, he connected the sound wedd-ness day to remember its spelling. But to him, it always felt wrong as he had to put a d in the word, which shouldn’t be spoken while talking as it’s silent.
