The Most Expensive Hobbies People Admit They Can’t Quit

An online thread recently asked: What’s your most money-consuming hobby?

For me, it’s definitely my pets (yes, they get their own Christmas gifts). A close second? My ever-growing jungle of high-maintenance houseplants that demand special soil, grow lights, and moral support.

And judging by the thousands of replies, I’m not alone in blowing my budget on the things I love. The answers ranged from sweet to unhinged—and made one thing clear: we’re all spending way too much on joy.

Here are some of the most relatable (and expensive) hobbies people admitted to.

1. Pets — Because Spoiling Them Is Non-Negotiable

Dogs, cats, ferrets, turtles, even hermit crabs…people agreed their pets are adorable little money pits. One commenter said their dogs recognize shopping bags because there’s always something in them for them.

2. Crafting — Where “Just One More Skein” Becomes a Lifestyle

One user admitted that buying craft supplies is a hobby of its own. Between knitting, cross-stitch, painting, and diamond art, the craft corner has basically turned into a small craft store. Another added, “DIY. Because paying triple for “doing it myself” builds character.”

3. Legos — The Brick Addiction Is Real

Several people blamed their spouses for introducing them to Legos, and it’s been downhill (and expensive) ever since. One said, “He bought me my first set ten years ago, and my life has never been the same.”

4. Boats & Sailing — A Floating Financial Black Hole

The boating crowd bonded over the phrase “Break Out Another Thousand.” As one sailor put it, “Sailing is a hole in the water where you pour money until you go dry.”

5. Just… Living

A lot of people cut straight to the point: existing is the most expensive hobby of all. “Breathing,” “being alive,” and “turning the heating on” were all popular entries.

6. Plants & Gardening — Nature’s Money Drain

From carnivorous plants to backyard gardens, plant lovers admitted they can’t stop collecting greenery—even if some of it refuses to stay alive. “Plants and rocks,” one person said simply. Fair enough.

7. Horses — The Original Wallet Vacuum

One commenter summed it up with a bumper sticker: “Poverty is owning a horse.” Between feed, care, gear, and vet bills, equestrians know their passion doesn’t come cheap.

8. Cars, Jeeps & Other Money-Eating Machines

9. Wine — Because Taste Is Expensive
