Thinking about a trip to San Diego? You’re in for endless sunshine, ocean views, and a city that mixes laid-back beach culture with vibrant neighborhoods and fascinating history.

Whether you’re kayaking through sea caves in La Jolla, exploring Balboa Park, or cheering at a Padres game, San Diego has something for every kind of traveler.

1. Explore Balboa Park

Balboa Park is the cultural heart of San Diego, with over 1,200 acres of gardens, trails, museums, and Spanish-Renaissance architecture. You can spend hours just wandering the park’s pathways or relaxing in one of its themed gardens like the Japanese Friendship Garden.

Inside the park, you’ll find 17 different museums covering everything from art and photography to science and air and space exploration. If you’re short on time, I recommend prioritizing the San Diego Museum of Art and the Air & Space Museum. Starting at the Visitor Center will also give you a good overview and help you plan your route.

2. Visit the San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo is one of the most famous zoos in the world, and even if you’re not usually a zoo person, this one is worth it. Home to more than 12,000 animals, the zoo is known for pioneering open-air habitats that feel more like safaris than cages. The stars of the show are definitely their two giant pandas. Alongside them, you’ll find everything from koalas and elephants to penguins, baboons, and leopards and more!

Highlights include the Skyfari Aerial Tram, which gives you an overhead view of the park, and the Lost Forest, where winding paths take you through lush tropical habitats past gorillas, orangutans, and tigers. To make the most of your visit, download the zoo’s official app—it’s great for planning your route, checking showtimes, and even finding the closest bathrooms and food spots. And don’t forget to buy tickets online ahead of time to skip the long entry lines. I did do this and was very grateful not to have to wait in line!

3. Hike the Slot Canyons at Torrey Pines & Visit the Gliderport

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is already known for its sweeping ocean views and rare Torrey pine trees, but if you want a truly unforgettable experience, join a guided slot canyon hike. These treks take you into hidden wind caves and sandstone canyons that most visitors never see. You’ll climb with ropes and gloves (that are provided by your guide), descend into narrow passages, and then be treated to some spectacular views. It can be strenuous in parts, but the reward is incredible. Your guide will even snap photos along the way so you can focus on the adventure.

If you’d rather stick to something easy on your own, the Guy Fleming Trail is a short loop under a mile long but still delivers some of the best ocean views in the reserve. For a slightly longer walk, the Razor Point Trail winds past dramatic sandstone cliffs and overlooks and is still very manageable.

Gliderport in Torrey pines

Once you’ve finished hiking, head just next door to the Torrey Pines Gliderport. This is a great spot to simply relax and watch paragliders soaring above the cliffs, floating right over the ocean. If you’re feeling bold, you can even go tandem with a pro. There’s also a small café here that’s perfect for grabbing lunch while you enjoy the view, and a Peregrine Falcon station where you can learn more about these incredible birds of prey. It’s the perfect way to wind down after an adventurous morning on the trails.

4. Wander Old Town San Diego

Old Town is known as the “birthplace of California,” and it’s where Spanish settlers first established a community in the state. Today, it’s a lively district filled with adobe buildings, museums, and shops that make you feel like you’ve stepped back into the 1800s.

San Diego, CA USA - April 7, 2023: The famous Whaley House Museum, America's most haunted house sign at Old Town San Diego.

You can tour the Whaley House—rumored to be one of the most haunted houses in the U.S.—or browse Mercado shops for handmade crafts. And you can’t visit Old Town without stopping for food: Café Coyote and Old Town Mexican Café are local favorites where you’ll see tortillas being made right in front of you.

5. Catch a Padres Game or Tour Petco Park

Baseball fans will love a stop at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres. Watching a game here is a blast—the atmosphere here is so lively and welcoming, even if you’re not a die-hard baseball fan.

If you can’t make a game, you can still take a behind-the-scenes tour of the ballpark. The tours let you walk on the field, check out the dugouts, and even step inside the press box. It’s a fun way to experience San Diego’s baseball culture without needing tickets to a game.

The Coronado is a famous attraction in Coronado Beach, San Diego. Panoramic view.

6. Relax at Coronado Beach & Visit the Hotel del Coronado

Coronado Beach is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the U.S., with wide sandy shores that sparkle thanks to mica in the sand. It’s family-friendly and perfect for swimming or just lounging with an ocean view.

The beach sits in front of the Hotel del Coronado, a historic Victorian-era resort that has hosted everyone from presidents to Marilyn Monroe. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, you can enjoy a cocktail on the terrace while watching the waves.

7. Kayak and Snorkel in La Jolla

La Jolla Shores is one of the most beautiful spots in San Diego, and it’s part of a protected marine reserve. Kayaking tours here are a must—you can paddle right into sea caves carved into the cliffs. Snorkeling tours are also popular, especially in summer, when you might even spot horn sharks.

Sea lions are regular visitors to this area, too, and you’ll often hear their barking calls echoing across the water. If you’d rather stay on shore, just watching them laze on the rocks is entertaining enough.

8. Visit the Birch Aquarium

Right nearby La Jolla Cove is the Birch Aquarium, part of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It’s an incredible place for families, with interactive exhibits, tide pool touch tanks, and panoramic ocean views. It’s a fun, educational stop that pairs perfectly with time at the Cove.

9. Take a Harbor Cruise

Seeing San Diego from the water gives you a whole new perspective on the city. Harbor cruises range from one-hour tours to dinner sails, but whichever you choose, you’ll get great views of the skyline, Coronado Bridge, and the Navy’s Pacific Fleet.

A sunset sail is especially memorable, with the colors reflecting off the water as the city lights begin to glow. Whale-watching tours also leave from here at certain times of year, giving you a chance to spot gray whales on their migration.

10. Tour the USS Midway Museum

The USS Midway is one of America’s longest-serving aircraft carriers, and today it’s a floating museum. You can explore the flight deck, sit inside restored aircraft, and hear stories directly from veterans who served on the ship.

It’s a massive complex—plan at least two to three hours to see everything. The included audio guide is excellent, and climbing up to the bridge gives you a great view of the San Diego Harbor.

11. Discover Little Italy

Little Italy has grown into one of San Diego’s trendiest neighborhoods, but it still holds onto its old-world charm. During the day, you can browse boutique shops and art galleries; at night, the streets come alive with amazing Italian restaurants, gelato shops, and wine bars.

If you’re visiting on a Saturday, don’t miss the Little Italy Mercato Farmers’ Market—it’s one of the largest in California, with everything from fresh produce to local crafts. And if you’re a foodie, this is the neighborhood you’ll want to spend the most time in.

12. Enjoy Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

If you’re chasing sunsets, this is the place to be. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park stretches along the coast with dramatic sandstone cliffs that drop into the ocean. Locals and visitors alike gather here in the evening to watch the sun sink below the horizon.

Bring a picnic blanket and arrive early to find a good spot—it can get busy at sunset. The area also has trails for daytime walks, offering beautiful ocean views even before the golden hour.

13. Visit LEGOLAND California

For families, or just kids at heart, LEGOLAND is a fun day trip from San Diego. Located in nearby Carlsbad, it’s packed with rides, interactive attractions, and incredible LEGO displays.

Highlights include Miniland USA, where entire city skylines are built out of LEGO bricks, and the SEA LIFE Aquarium. If you’re traveling with kids, this one is a guaranteed hit, and it’s close enough to combine with beach time in Carlsbad.

14. Take a Day Trip to Tijuana or Temecula Wine Country

San Diego’s location makes it perfect for day trips. Cross the border into Tijuana (don’t forget your passport) for an afternoon of street tacos, markets, and Mexican culture. It’s a short drive, and guided tours make it easy if you don’t want to handle border logistics yourself.

If wine is more your style, Temecula Valley is about an hour away and has rolling vineyards, wine tasting rooms, and hot air balloon rides over the countryside. Both options are an easy way to expand your San Diego itinerary.
