California Is the Most Christmassy State in America, According to This New Study

Every December, the same question pops up: Where does Christmas feel the most real? Is it snowy mountain towns? Places with Santa in the name? Or states where holiday vibes seem baked into the landscape itself?

A new analysis of more than 600 Christmas-themed place names across the U.S. took a different approach to answering that question — not by decorations or events, but by geography. Researchers looked at creeks, mountains, towns, lakes, and valleys with names tied to Christmas, winter, and holiday symbolism, then scored them based on how festive they were.

Some states ran away with it. Others surprised.

Here’s what the data shows.

1. California Is the Most Christmassy State in America

Yes, California.

With 70 Christmas-themed place names and the highest overall score, California ranks No. 1. The state’s sheer size helps, but the variety is what stands out: Christmas Tree Cove along the coast, Christmas Canyon in the desert, Christmas Hill in the mountains — the holiday spirit shows up everywhere.

It’s not just quantity either. Several of California’s locations scored high for direct Christmas references, giving the state a decisive lead.

2. Oregon

Oregon takes second place thanks to Christmas Lake, Jack Frost Spring, and North Pole Ridge, among dozens of others. One standout: a cluster of Christmas-named lakes and valleys in the state’s high desert that feels almost intentionally festive.

3. Alaska

Alaska ranks third overall — but it wins on intensity.

It’s home to Merry Christmas Creek, the single most festive place name in the entire dataset. Alaska also has Jack Frost Creek, Christmas Tree Point, and a literal city called North Pole, where thousands of letters addressed to Santa arrive every year.

4. North Carolina

Holly does a lot of the heavy lifting here. Holly Creek, Holly Point, Holly Grove, and even Mistletoe Creek help North Carolina crack the top five — proof that Christmas geography isn’t just a Western thing.

5. Idaho

Idaho rounds out the top five with Christmas Tree Gulch, Christmas Mountain, and two separate North Poles. Snowy winters and rugged terrain clearly inspired more than a few festive naming decisions.

The Rest of the Top 10

  1. Texas – Anchored by the Christmas Mountains in Big Bend
  2. Washington – Evergreen forests and Christmas Creek galore
  3. Arkansas – Christmas Knob, North Pole Knob, and a historic Mistletoe settlement
  4. Virginia – Christmas Tree Point, Noel, and multiple Holly Bluffs
  5. Montana – Christmas Tree Creek, Christmas Reservoir, and wide-open winter landscapes

The States With the Most Intense Christmas Names

When researchers looked at the average festivity score instead of the total volume, the rankings shifted.

Arizona took the top spot by a mile.

Why? Because it has a town literally named Santa Claus, along with Christmas Tree Lake and other high-impact names. Fewer locations — but stronger Christmas commitment.

Other high scorers included:

  • Nevada, with Santa Claus Spring
  • Georgia, home to the City of Santa Claus
  • Minnesota, where Santa Claus Lake boosts the average

It turns out you don’t need dozens of places — just one very on-the-nose name.

The Most Delightfully Extra Place Names

Some locations didn’t just reference Christmas — they leaned all the way in.

  • Merry Christmas Creek (Alaska) – The only place name that’s actually a holiday greeting
  • Jack Frost Creek & Jack Frost Spring – Alaska and Oregon both personified winter itself
  • Snow Dragon Mountain (North Carolina) – Mythical, dramatic, and wildly festive
  • Yule Pass & Yule Lakes (Colorado) – Colorado quietly dominates the Yule category

And yes, reindeer show up everywhere — from Alaska to Maine to Nevada.

If this has you thinking about leaning into the season a little more, many of the most Christmassy states also show up on lists of the best winter travel destinations this year — often with price tags that are more approachable than you’d expect. And if you’re curious how holiday culture varies beyond place names, there’s also a fun breakdown of what each state considers the ultimate Christmas movie, which might explain a few family debates.
