Drivers Say This Car Brand Has the Worst Reputation for Aggressive Driving

A new survey also found that not using turn signals is the most annoying driving habit, ahead of tailgating and slow drivers in the passing lane.

Most of us have a few road habits that instantly make our blood pressure spike.

Maybe it is the person who rides your bumper for three miles or the driver camping in the passing lane like they have taken out a long-term lease (this is mine!). Or maybe it is the car that drifts across lanes with absolutely no turn signal, because apparently the rest of us are supposed to guess.

A new survey from DiscoverCars.com looked at road rage, aggressive driving reputations, and the habits that annoy drivers most. The car rental comparison and booking website surveyed 713 drivers around the world in April 2026.

The results are based on driver perception, not official crash or ticket data, but they are still pretty interesting.

BMW Had the Worst Reputation for Aggressive Driving

According to the survey, BMW was the car brand most associated with aggressive driving.

A full 58% of respondents said aggressive behavior on the road made them think of BMW. (And honestly, if I had been asked the same question, BMW probably would have been the first brand that popped into my head too.)

DiscoverCars.com also noted that a previous study from the company found BMWs were the most likely to fail to signal correctly.

Audi came in second, with 30% of respondents associating the brand with aggressive driving.

Land Rover followed at 14%, while Tesla came in at 12%. Volkswagen rounded out the top five at 11%, making it the only non-premium brand in the top group.

Other brands were mentioned far less often. Mercedes came in at 3%, Toyota and Mazda came in at 2%, while Ford and Volvo each received 1%.

So yes, the premium-car stereotype seems to be doing some heavy lifting here. Fair or not, drivers clearly have opinions.

Italy Was Rated the Most Aggressive Country for Driving

The survey also asked respondents to rate how aggressive drivers are in their own country, using a scale from 1 to 5. A score of 1 meant very calm, while 5 meant very aggressive.

The average score around the world was 3 out of 5.

Italy had the highest rating, with residents giving fellow drivers a 3.5 out of 5. New Zealand and the United States tied for second at 3.4.

The United Kingdom landed in the middle with a score of 3. The Netherlands and France both scored 2.9, while Canada came in slightly lower at 2.8.

Australia had the calmest rating in the survey, with residents giving drivers there a 2.7 out of 5.

That does not mean you should cancel your rental car in Italy, though. Driving customs can vary a lot by country, and what feels aggressive to one traveler may feel completely normal to someone who drives there every day.

The Most Annoying Driving Habit Was Not Using Turn Signals

The survey also asked drivers what annoys them most about other people on the road.

The top complaint was not using turn signals, selected by 56% of respondents.

Tailgating came in second at 46%, followed by slow driving in the passing lane at 43%. Distracted driving was close behind at 39%.

Sudden braking was selected by 20% of respondents, while 10% chose “other.”

It’s hard to argue with this list. A turn signal is such a small thing, but skipping it makes everyone around you work harder.

Most Drivers Admit They Get Frustrated Sometimes

The survey also asked how often respondents get frustrated with other drivers, and most admitted it happens at least occasionally.

That was the answer from 68% of respondents, while 17% said they get annoyed often. Another 5% said they feel annoyed every day, and only 10% said they never get frustrated with other drivers.

Most drivers are not constantly laying on the horn, though. The survey found that 65% use their horn occasionally, while 32% said they never do.

What This Means for Travelers Renting Cars

For travelers, this survey is a useful reminder that driving abroad is not always as simple as picking up the keys and following the GPS.

Road etiquette can feel very different depending on where you are. Some places use the horn more casually. Some drivers are more comfortable with tight merges, quick lane changes, or assertive city driving. If you are renting a car somewhere new, it is worth looking up the basic road rules, toll systems, and parking norms before you go.

And, for everyone’s sake, use your turn signal.
