Dwayne Johnson’s Long-Haired Maui Reveal in Disney’s Live-Action Moana Is Getting Roasted Online

The new trailer finally showed Johnson’s live-action Maui look, and a lot of viewers immediately locked in on the hair.

Disney’s new trailer for the live-action Moana finally gave fans their first real look at Dwayne Johnson as Maui, flowing hair and all. And, unsurprisingly, the internet had thoughts.

The film, which stars Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and brings Johnson back as the shapeshifting demigod he voiced in the animated franchise, hits theaters July 10, 2026.

The trailer debuted on March 23, and Disney also released an “Artistry of Moana” featurette the same day, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s craftsmanship and cultural influences.

But while Disney clearly wanted viewers to focus on the scale of the remake, a lot of the comments on Facebook had one immediate priority: Maui’s hair.

For plenty of viewers, the look immediately brought back memories of one of Johnson’s earlier eras. “Anyone who watched The Scorpion King would know what he looks like with long hair,” one person wrote.

Others were less nostalgic and far more brutal. “Lmao just the rock in a f—ing wig,” one commenter wrote.

That basic theme came up a lot. “Did they buy his wig off Temu?” one person asked. Another piled on with, “Did they just hit up the Spirit Halloween to get a wig 😂.”

A few people were already thinking ahead to who might have the best reaction to all of this. “Kevin Hart is gonna have a field day with this,” one person wrote, while another added, “I just hear Kevin Hart’s voice saying, ‘You ain’t got no nipples!’”

Some of the jokes got even more specific. “Weird Al wants his hair back,” one person wrote. Another commenter said, “This looks like an snl skit. lol 😆.”

A few viewers focused on the styling details. One person joked, “His forehead is the lead role here,” while another compared the look to “a Temu Troy Polamalu.”

Not everyone seemed bothered, though. “Adults complaining like they’re the audience 😅,” one commenter pointed out, which is fair. The trailer also gave fans a look at other familiar characters and moments, including Tamatoa, Te Kā, and Maui’s shark-inspired transformation.

One of the funniest comments ignored the hair debate altogether. “All I wanted to know was if the crab was back. He is and he looks the same. Thanks trailer. Saved me a watch,” one person wrote.

Disney may have wanted the conversation to center on Maui’s live-action debut, but at least for now, a lot of the internet seems more interested in the hair than the heroics. But hey, at least people are paying attention.

And if you enjoy this kind of extremely online celebrity discourse, it’s also worth checking out the piece on the celebrities people say they would absolutely not want to sit next to on a plane — which, yes, includes Johnson — as well as the story on Kevin Hart reacting to his own wax figure in the way pretty much everyone expected.
