Experts Say Booking Flights to These 15 Destinations Before May 1 Could Save You Up to $450

A new fare analysis found several European and warm-weather destinations still priced below the levels travelers typically see as peak summer demand gets closer.

Travelers who haven’t booked summer flights yet may still have a brief window to find lower fares before peak pricing fully takes hold.

According to a new analysis from Dollar Flight Club, some popular international and warm-weather destinations are still coming in below the levels travelers typically see later in the season. The company looked at round-trip economy fares from major U.S. airports on April 9 and compared them with what those same routes typically cost closer to summer.

“There’s a short stretch between mid-April and early May where fares to some of the most popular destinations in the world still sit below peak summer levels,” Jesse Neugarten, founder and CEO of Dollar Flight Club, said in a statement. “Spring break demand has faded, but airlines haven’t fully moved into summer pricing mode yet. Once that shift happens, the lowest fare disappears quickly and usually doesn’t come back until the end of summer.”

Several European routes showed some of the biggest gaps between current fares and the prices travelers often see closer to peak season.

Zurich, Switzerland
Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich:$463–$585 now vs. $800–$1,050 in summer
Rome:$415–$572 now vs. $750–$950 in summer
Athens:$550–$750 now vs. $800–$1,050 in summer
Barcelona:$409–$569 now vs. $700–$900 in summer
Dublin:$432–$580 now vs. $700–$900 in summer

Other European destinations that Dollar Flight Club says are still tracking below typical summer pricing include Paris, Lisbon, London, Amsterdam, and Reykjavik.

For travelers thinking about Europe, airfare is only part of the equation. Cities like Athens and Dublin can offer very different summer experiences once you’re on the ground, from crowds and pace to food and day-trip options. I’ve also covered both destinations separately in my guides to Athens and Dublin for travelers who want a closer look before booking.

Beach and warm-weather destinations also showed meaningful gaps between current fares and the prices Dollar Flight Club says are more common later in the season.

Cancun:$250–$450 now vs. $400–$550 in summer
San Juan:$160–$400 now vs. $350–$500 in summer
Montego Bay:$310–$390 now vs. $450–$650 in summer
Punta Cana:$259–$390 now vs. $450–$650 in summer
Costa Rica:$225–$450 now vs. $500–$700 in summer

Airfare can still vary based on departure city, travel dates, and availability, and the cheapest fare on a route may come with tradeoffs like longer layovers or more restrictive ticket rules.

Still, if summer travel is already on your calendar, this may be one of the better moments to comparison shop, especially on European routes and popular beach destinations that tend to get more expensive as the season gets closer.

And if you’re still deciding where to go, it may also be worth looking at which traditionally expensive international vacation spots are showing lower airfare this year.
