The 10 Most Popular Movies From the Past Year, Ranked by What People Were Actually Watching

From superhero reboots to viral horror, these were the movies people couldn’t stop watching in 2025.

Every year, a few movies break out because they’re genuinely great, and a few break out because everyone can’t stop clicking, streaming, or arguing about them online.

IMDbPro’s MOVIEmeter rankings track what people are actually looking up, which makes this list less about prestige and more about real-world buzz.

Here are the 10 most popular movies of 2025, ranked from #10 to #1.

10. F1: The Movie

Brad Pitt plus high-speed racing turned out to be a winning formula. Even people who don’t follow Formula One showed up for the IMAX spectacle, and once it hit streaming, curiosity alone kept it in heavy rotation. It also helped that the racing scenes felt visceral instead of gimmicky.

9. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

At this point, watching Tom Cruise flirt with death has become its own genre. This final chapter didn’t dominate opening weekend the way earlier installments did, but it still pulled massive interest thanks to jaw-dropping stunt footage and the sense that this era of action movies is officially closing a chapter.

8. Thunderbolts*

The mystery around that asterisk did more heavy lifting than Marvel probably expected. While it didn’t have Avengers-level hype, people who actually watched it tended to like it, especially because of Florence Pugh, who continues to be one of the MCU’s most watchable anchors.

7. Happy Gilmore 2

Nostalgia can be risky, but this sequel leaned into exactly what fans wanted: jokes, cameos, and zero attempts to reinvent the wheel. Dropping it straight onto Netflix turned it into a low-effort comfort watch that people happily put on again and again.

6. Frankenstein

Guillermo del Toro finally got to make his dream project, and once it hit Netflix, it exploded. This wasn’t a casual background watch; it was dark, emotional, and very much del Toro, which only made people more curious once word spread.

5. Jurassic World: Rebirth

Audiences may say they’re tired of dinosaurs, but box office numbers always tell a different story. This reboot benefited from a fresh cast, Spielberg’s involvement, and just enough nostalgia to pull people back in without fully retreading old ground.

4. One Battle After Another

This was one of those movies people kept Googling, even if they didn’t rush to theaters. Between its long runtime, heavy themes, and stacked cast, it sparked curiosity and debate, and that alone kept it high on the MOVIEmeter charts for months.

3. Sinners

A vampire movie, a Southern gothic story, and a personal tribute all rolled into one… and somehow it worked. This film crossed genre lines and brought in horror fans and awards-season chatter, which is a rare combo.

2. Weapons

This was the horror movie people wouldn’t stop dissecting online. Between its unsettling imagery, strange symbols, and meme-worthy moments, it turned into a cultural conversation almost overnight — the kind of movie people watch once and then immediately Google.

1. Superman

Rebooting Superman in a moment of superhero fatigue was always going to be risky, and that’s exactly why people were watching so closely. Whether viewers loved it or just wanted to see if it worked, this film dominated attention all year — especially once it hit streaming and reignited the debate all over again.

If this list got you thinking about how popularity and quality don’t always line up, there’s been a lot of conversation lately around how data-backed rankings compare to taste-driven ones — including a breakdown of the greatest movies of all time based purely on numbers, not opinions. And if you’re more in the mood to binge than debate, there’s also a recent roundup of Netflix shows so addictive that viewers admit they stayed up until morning finishing them.
