These 21 Mispronounced Words Might Be Making You Sound… Less Than Brilliant

You might be smarter than you sound — here’s how to prove it.

We all stumble over words from time to time. But some slip-ups are so common, and so cringe, they can seriously undercut how you’re perceived.

Whether you’re giving a presentation or just chatting in line at Starbucks, certain mispronunciations scream “I didn’t pay attention in English class.”

Here are 21 real-life word fails (straight from the comments section) that could be making someone sound a little… less educated than they’d like to think.

1. “Axed” instead of “Asked”

No one’s getting chopped… It’s just a question. But saying “I axed him about it” might make people do a double-take.

2. “Irregardless”

Yes, it’s technically a word, but that doesn’t mean you should use it. This double-negative disaster has been debated for years, and most grammar sticklers will still slap a red pen on it faster than you can say “regardless.” Use at your own risk.

3. “Supposably” instead of “Supposedly”

If you’re trying to sound informed, this is not the hill to mispronounce.

4. “Should of / Would of / Could of”

This one’s more about writing than speaking, but “should’ve” is short for should have, not “should of.” Grammar gods weep.

5. “I seen it”

No. Just… no. It’s “I saw it” or “I’ve seen it.” Not both.

6. “Lie-berry” for Library

This one’s a classic. But if you’re visiting a place filled with books, try not to murder the word.

7. “For all intensive purposes”

It’s “for all intents and purposes.” Unless your purposes are doing yoga at boot camp, this is probably wrong.

8. “Epitome” pronounced phonetically (like ‘epp-it-tome’)

Bonus points if you’re using it while insulting someone’s intelligence. Ironic gold.

9. “I could care less”

Then… you care? The correct phrase is “I couldn’t care less.” Otherwise, you’re proving the opposite of what you think.

10. “Litrally” instead of “Literally”

The missing vowel is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Say it with me: lit-er-uh-lee.

11. “Pacific” when you mean “Specific”

Unless you’re talking about the ocean, this one is a big ol’ nope.

12. “Joe and I’s relationship”

Popular on reality TV, but still wrong. It’s “Joe and my relationship.” Grammar still applies in the confession booth.

13. “Me and him went”

It’s “he and I went.” Yes, it sounds fancy. No, it’s not snobby. It’s just correct.

14. “Paradigm” pronounced “para-dig-em”

This one lives rent-free in corporate conference rooms. If you’re trying to sound visionary, maybe Google it first.

15. “Warshington” (with an R)

There is no “R” in “Washington” or “wash.” Midwest, we’re looking at you.

16. “Prostrate” vs. “Prostate”

One is a gland. The other means lying face down. Mix them up, and you’ve got a very confusing doctor’s visit.

17. “These ones”

This one really gets under people’s skin. Just say “these.” Adding “ones” is like putting ketchup on a steak.

18. “Ekspecially” instead of “Especially”

Even newscasters get this one wrong — but that doesn’t make it right.

19. “Crown” instead of “Crayon”

There’s a “Y” in there for a reason. Unless you’re actually royalty, it’s probably not a crown.

20. “Realtor” pronounced “Real-a-tor”

There’s no extra “A.” Two syllables: Real-tor. That’s it.

21. “Illinois” with an S

Please… the S is silent.
