Why You Should Never Plug a Space Heater Into a Power Strip

A viral post from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission revealed just how many people are getting this wrong — and why it matters.

A recent holiday-themed post from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission went viral for its cheeky gingerbread visuals — but one message in particular stopped people cold:

Never plug a space heater into a power strip or extension cord.

Judging by the comments, this was news to a lot of people.

Poor contact between socket and plug led to power cord burning and almost caused fire.

“I’m literally sitting next to a space heater plugged into a power strip. I had no idea!” one commenter admitted. Another shared a terrifying firsthand experience where a space heater and extension cord melted together after months of use — somehow without starting a fire.

Why Space Heaters and Power Strips Are a Dangerous Combo

Here’s the blunt truth: space heaters draw a massive amount of electricity. Most power strips and extension cords simply aren’t built to handle that sustained load.

According to safety experts, plugging a space heater into anything other than a wall outlet can lead to:

  • Overheating wires
  • Melted plugs and outlets
  • Electrical arcing
  • House fires

Even so-called “heavy-duty” extension cords aren’t a safe workaround. The risk isn’t theoretical; it’s one of the most common causes of winter home fires.

“But It’s Been Fine So Far” Is the Trap

One reason this mistake is so widespread is that it often seems fine… until it isn’t.

People in the thread admitted they’d been doing this for years without incident. That’s exactly why it’s dangerous. Electrical failures don’t always give a warning — they escalate fast.

As one commenter put it:

“Still don’t know how it didn’t burn the house down.”

It’s Not Just Space Heaters

Several commenters pointed out that other high-wattage appliances also need to be plugged directly into the wall, including:

  • Electric blankets
  • Air fryers
  • Microwaves
  • Toasters

If it heats up fast or pulls serious power, it probably doesn’t belong in a power strip.

Why So Many People Miss This Rule

To be fair, people aren’t ignoring warnings on purpose. Even though many heaters include tags, box warnings, and manual instructions, most people don’t expect a basic household item to pose a serious fire risk when used “normally.”

That’s exactly why posts like this matter. As one commenter said:

“This post made at least one home safer.”

The Bottom Line

If you’re using a space heater this winter:

  • Plug it directly into a wall outlet
  • Keep it several feet away from furniture
  • Never run it through a power strip or extension cord

If there’s one takeaway from this viral warning, it’s that familiar routines can hide real risk. The same goes for holiday travel, where traffic volume and timing make certain days far more dangerous than most people expect….
