These are the Most Dangerous States for Online Dating in 2025, Ranked
From soaring scam reports to violent crime, these are the toughest places in America to look for love online.

Finding love online can be risky anywhere, but some states carry far higher odds of scams, fraud, or even violent crime.
PrivacyJournal’s 2025 study analyzed romance scam reports, fraud, identity theft, violent crime, STD rates, and registered sex offenders to rank the states where online dating is most dangerous.
Here are the 10 states at the very bottom, starting from #10 and counting down to the riskiest.

10. Tennessee
Tennessee struggles with violent crime, reporting more than 600 incidents per 100,000 residents. Fraud and identity theft are also elevated compared to the national average. While its STD and sex offender numbers aren’t the very worst, the state’s crime profile makes online dating here especially high-risk.

9. Louisiana
Louisiana has the highest STD rate in the country, with more than 1,100 cases per 100,000 residents. Violent crime is also a major concern, along with steady fraud and identity theft problems. Daters in Louisiana face multiple overlapping risks, making it one of the toughest states to safely meet someone online.

8. Florida
Florida ranks dead last for identity theft and near the bottom for fraud. Even though it scores somewhat better in violent crime and sex offender numbers, the sheer volume of financial crimes tied to online activity is hard to overlook. For anyone swiping in the Sunshine State, vigilance is key.

7. South Carolina
South Carolina posts poor scores across the board, with high violent crime, high fraud, and high STD rates. There isn’t a single strong category to offset the negatives, which means online dating here carries risk from multiple angles.

6. Arkansas
Arkansas has one of the highest numbers of registered sex offenders in the nation, coupled with a violent crime rate that ranks near the bottom. STD rates are also troublingly high. Fraud is slightly less of an issue here, but not enough to balance out the bigger dangers.

5. Delaware
Delaware fell into the bottom five this year after an increase in romance scam reports and STDs. Fraud and identity theft also remain big issues, with the state ranking poorly across nearly every category. For such a small state, the risks loom surprisingly large.

4. Arizona
Arizona ranks dead last for romance scams, with 14 reports per 100,000 residents. That’s the highest in the nation. Fraud is also rampant, and violent crime plus high STD rates add to the concern. A relatively low sex offender count is the lone positive, but not nearly enough to outweigh the red flags.

3. Georgia
Georgia is the worst state for fraud and nearly the worst for identity theft and STDs. The FBI’s Internet Crime Report shows the state lost hundreds of millions to cybercriminals in 2024 alone. While romance scam reports are oddly low, the overall environment makes online dating here highly risky.

2. Alaska (49)
Alaska has the highest violent crime rate in the country — 730 reports per 100,000 residents. It also sits near the bottom for STDs and sex offender counts. Identity theft numbers are better here than in many states, but that single bright spot doesn’t balance out the severe safety concerns.

1. Nevada (50)
Nevada takes the crown as the riskiest state for online dating in 2025. It reports some of the highest rates of fraud, identity theft, and romance scams in the U.S. Even its “best” ranking, which is 25th place for sex offenders, is still middle-of-the-road. For anyone dating online in Nevada, the risks are about as high as they come right now.
