A Fashion Expert Shares the 6 Biggest Bag Trends of Summer 2026—and How to Wear Them
Oversized totes, Y2K shoulder bags and playful charms are shaping summer style, according to an Accessorize buying and design director.

Handbags are getting more practical, more personalized and a little more nostalgic this summer.
Rebecca Ribeyro, Buying and Design Director at Accessorize, says many of 2026’s biggest bag trends draw from the ’90s and early 2000s, but the latest versions feel more polished than the originals.
The strongest styles range from roomy everyday totes to slim evening bags, with plenty of texture and embellishment mixed in. Here are the six bag trends Ribeyro expects to see everywhere this summer, along with her advice for wearing them.
Y2K Shoulder Bags
Small shoulder bags are still going strong, but the 2026 versions feel less like a full early-2000s costume.
Glossy patent finishes, croc-effect textures and compact silhouettes give the trend a cleaner, more modern look. Ribeyro recommends pairing one with elevated basics rather than leaning too heavily into Y2K styling.
“The trick to styling a Y2K shoulder bag is pairing it with more elevated pieces rather than going full noughties,” she said. “Try pairing the bag with a white shirt and wide-leg jeans for a modern 2026 take that’s nostalgic without looking like a costume.”

East-West Bags
East-west bags have become one of the year’s most recognizable handbag shapes.
The long, narrow silhouette feels sleek and polished, making it an easy choice for dinners, weddings and other occasions when a large tote would look out of place.
“An east-west bag instantly makes an outfit feel more considered,” Ribeyro said. She suggests wearing one tucked under the arm with a slip dress and sandals.
Soft Suede Bags
Suede has carried over from fall into summer, particularly in shades of chocolate brown, tan and olive.
The texture works especially well with simple outfits, adding interest without relying on a loud print or bright color. A suede bag can also make basic denim and a white T-shirt feel more pulled together.
“Suede brings warmth and texture to even the simplest outfit,” Ribeyro said. Her suggested combination is a chocolate suede bag with light-wash denim, a white T-shirt and a trench coat.

Oversized and Slouchy Bags
Tiny bags may photograph well, but larger totes are far more useful for everyday life.
Oversized totes and relaxed hobo bags are replacing rigid mini styles, giving people enough room for a wallet, sunglasses, water bottle and everything else that mysteriously ends up in a handbag.
Ribeyro recommends balancing a soft, slouchy bag with more tailored clothing. Wide-leg trousers, a fitted waistcoat and ballet flats keep the overall outfit from looking too relaxed.
Bag Charms and Personalization
One of summer’s easiest trends does not require buying a new bag.
Charms, silk scarves, keyrings and mini pouches are being used to personalize basic leather totes and shoulder bags. The look can be playful or understated, depending on how many accessories are added.
“Bag charms are a fun way to show your personality in your styling without buying a whole new handbag,” Ribeyro said. She suggests starting with one or two charms or tying a silk scarf around the handle of a bag already in your closet.

Sequin and Disc-Embellished Bags
Sequins and oversized paillettes are bringing some shine back to evening bags.
The style takes cues from Y2K party fashion, but it also fits neatly into summer wedding and vacation wardrobes. Shell-inspired embellishments and reflective discs add movement without requiring an equally flashy outfit.
“A sequin or disc-embellished bag does all the talking, so I’d keep the rest of the outfit simple,” Ribeyro said. Her styling advice is straightforward: pair it with a little black dress and let the bag be the focal point.
The Most Wearable Bag Trends This Summer
Not every trend requires a complete wardrobe overhaul.
Oversized totes and suede bags are likely to have the most staying power, while charms and scarves offer a low-cost way to update something you already own. East-west and sequin bags make more sense for occasions when practicality is less important.
Ribeyro says the larger shift is toward choosing accessories that feel personal rather than following one specific aesthetic.
“The biggest trend isn’t following one particular aesthetic,” she said. “It’s choosing a bag that reflects your personality and styling it in a way that feels authentic to you.”
