A Little Life Update

Today’s post I wanted to take a minute to update everyone on what exactly is going on over here at Have Clothes, Will Travel.

We left Argentina over a month ago, but there hasn’t been any big moving announcements or hints as to what’s been happening since we left. I’ve been getting a few questions about this and figured I’d let you lovely readers know what’s going on since that announcement.

A pic from our first night in Rosario, Argentina.

If you’ve been following along for awhile, you’ll know that my husband and I are very quiet about these matters until absolutely everything is in place…thanks to some bad experiences in the past! And everything changes sooooo fast.

Here’s a rundown of what we thought was going to happen after we left Argentina.

*First up, we thought we might potentially move to Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur to be exact. Well, we’re not there.

*Next, up was Helsinki, Finland or Milan, Italy. But those weren’t a good fit either.

*There was serious consideration for Norway for a couple weeks. (Not there either, though! Haha.)

*Brief moment where we thought we were headed to Montana.

*Then, the most serious consideration of all, was moving to Moscow, Russia. This one we actually started to get the ball going, investigating immigration, looking into banking, etc. Let’s just say, that’s all very complicated! Haha. But we are not going to Russia for the time being…

This is why we keep quiet on these matters…as it’s such a roller coaster and changes SO fast.

A little recap on our weird lifestyle for new readers:

We're moving!
Our first “big move” announcement when we went to Japan!

We move all over the world based on where my husband is working. So, it really comes down to where there’s a need for him.

My husband and I don’t own a home and have been living out of suitcases essentially. We have to be able to move at a moment’s notice!

We’ve lived all over the US and in Japan, Australia and Argentina so far.

Dinner with a Geisha
We’ve had some incredible travel experiences from this lifestyle.

So, what’s happening now?

Well, I am writing this post from a computer in Iowa. That’s where my husband is currently working. We’re trying to decide now if we want to continue moving as we do, setup shop in Iowa for awhile and try to get back into the expat life after this project. (We’re thinking that would be around Christmas of this year, unless something changes, haha.) Or…if we want to find a more permanent location and begin to lead a more normal life. (Likely Wisconsin, that’s where our families are.)

The ladder is honestly sounding the most appealing to me at the moment. I love traveling and the excitement it brings to our life. However, this nomadic lifestyle isn’t the easiest, and there are plenty of days I wish I just had a spot to myself (or a closet for that matter, haha). We’ve been living this way for over 5 years now! That’s really crazy to think.

But regardless of what we decide, we’ll be in the US now until likely Christmastime.

moving
Perhaps not living out of suitcases all the time? But we shall see! (This is all of our stuff when we moved from Australia to Argentina.)

Now, if we do settle down, that certainly wouldn’t mean we’d stop traveling. We just wouldn’t be living in the spots we go to.

But no decisions have been made yet! I’ll be heading back by family in Wisconsin next week to mull over the choices, and I’ll keep you all in the loop once we’ve figured it out. I’ve just been getting so many questions regarding this, that I figured it would be better to clear it all up now and stop being so mysterious about it all.

So, this is where I’m at right now…in limbo! Wish me luck!

**Also, a heads up for regular readers! On top of all of this, my laptop stopped working this morning! So, Friday’s post will be dependent on if I can get it fixed in time. If there’s no post on Friday, just know that’s the reason, and all is well otherwise. I’ll have my laptop problems sorted out by Monday morning otherwise.

  1. I love travelling but I think as well that sometimes it’s not so easy to move and live on your suitcases all the time. I like to have a place that I can always be back- place called home.

  2. I can completely sympathize! I think we all reach a point where we feel ready to put down roots somewhere. In our life, I’m the one who’s job has taken us all over the world. I looked back one day and realized that I had made HUGE major moves every four years since I was 18 (Boston, New Zealand, Back to the US to San Diego, Australia, back to the US to North Carolina). Moving around the world takes it’s toll…exciting, but exhausting. 🙂 We still travel a ton (for fun, if you can believe it!), but I know how you feel about wanting to be DONE with the nomadic lifestyle for awhile. 🙂 No matter what you decide, you’ll know deep down what feels best for you guys. At the moment, I’m stupid excited to buy a house and PAINT A WALL. 😉 Ahhhh we all have goals….

    1. Oh gosh, yes! You’re doing some major moves yourself, Kara! It’s so fun and exciting…but yes, also very exhausting. 🙂 And thank you so much, Kara! Haha, I hear you! Enjoy painting your wall! 🙂 🙂

  3. Thank you for the update, and of course, we will all support whatever you guys decide to do! I really do enjoy your blog, you seem like a very down-to-earth person, and I love the combination of fashion & travels! Wishing you and your family all the best!!

    1. Oh gosh, thank you so much, Rebecca! Your kind words mean the world to me. 🙂 Wishing you all the best as well!

  4. It sounds really amazing and I think it’s so exciting that you have resided in so many interesting places. I hope you will make the best decision for you.

  5. Oh it sounds like a really fun kind of decision to make! There are definitely pros and cons to all the different options – hope you get some time to reflect and do what is best for you both 🙂

Hope you are having a great week so far 🙂 We have some cooler weather at last so it’s starting to feel a little more like autumn 🙂

  6. Oh my goodness, congrats! Welcome back to the U.S.. I love how y’all can pack up at a moments notice. You’ve been so fun to watch. I am happy for y’all.

  7. Wow, Lindsey sounds crazy with all that uncertainty! I can completely understand that it can get a bit too much sometimes, and you start considering settling down in one place and when do “normal” holidays from there. No matter what you end up doing, I’m wishing you all the best luck ? ?

  8. So many ideas have been processed through!…
I can’t help but wish you had chosen Montana next–It would’ve been a short road trip over to visit you!

Best wishes to you in your next decision… 5 years of travel really is a lot! Sounds like a dream, but i can definitely see how the stability of a permanent home would be wonderful after all that.

    1. I would’ve loved Montana! Unfortunately, the decision isn’t really up to us…it’s just where my husband is needed and Montana ended up not needing him at the moment. I definitely want to visit one day, though ? And thank you so much, Alissa!

  9. I don’t know how you do it, Lindsey!! I’m sure I could, because we tend to be stronger than we think, but oh my golly—the stress and uncertainty could be overload!!!!!
Needless to say, good luck with the computer, and looking forward to updates…

    1. Haha! It certainly has its moments! I did honestly get used to it, and it really has been worth the stress and uncertainty. But, gosh, it’s hard one to keep up for forever. And thank you so much, Jodie!
