Chicago Is One of America’s Most-Booked Summer Cities as Midwest Travel Surges

Fora’s latest booking data shows travelers choosing Chicago, Great Lakes escapes, national parks, and event-driven trips across the Midwest.

Summer travel coverage tends to focus on Mediterranean beaches, coastal resorts, and the annual scramble for a reasonably priced European flight.

But new booking data suggests plenty of travelers are looking closer to home, and the Midwest is having a particularly strong summer.

Chicago is the third most-booked U.S. city for summer 2026, behind only New York City and Las Vegas, according to Fora’s latest Summer Trend Report. Michigan, South Dakota, North Dakota, Missouri, and Ohio also rank among the country’s fastest-growing Midwest destinations.

The findings are based on trips booked through Fora travel advisors. The company compared bookings for travel between mid-May and mid-September 2025 with the same period in 2026, using reservations made before May 15.

That means this is not a survey of every American traveler. Still, the numbers provide an interesting look at where people are spending their money this summer.

Chicago Lands Among the Top Three U.S. Cities

Anyone who has spent a warm weekend in Chicago probably will not find its ranking particularly shocking. There are a ton of fun things to do in Chicago.

The city combines the restaurants, museums, hotels, and entertainment people expect from a major urban trip with 26 free beaches along Lake Michigan. Visitors can spend the morning at an art museum and the afternoon swimming, kayaking, biking the lakefront, or sitting at a beachfront restaurant.

Chicago’s summer calendar is another draw. Music festivals, neighborhood street fairs, food events, baseball games, rooftop bars, and boat tours give travelers plenty to do without requiring them to rent a car or leave the city.

Fora’s report credits Chicago’s lakefront beaches, festivals, and food scene with helping it reassert itself as one of the country’s major summer destinations.

It also has the capacity to handle a significant number of visitors, something that is important when smaller resort towns and national park gateways are already crowded.

Midwest States Are Seeing Some of the Fastest Growth

Chicago may have one of the highest overall booking totals, but the growth is spreading well beyond the city.

Fora named South Dakota, Michigan, North Dakota, Missouri, and Ohio as the five fastest-growing Midwest states for summer 2026. The report did not provide individual percentage increases for each state, but it noted that multiple Midwest states experienced year-over-year booking growth of more than 100%.

Michigan’s increase is largely centered around Mackinac Island and Traverse City.

Mackinac Island has no cars or chain hotels, but it does have more than 70 miles of hiking and biking trails, historic attractions, horse-drawn carriages, and a truly impressive commitment to selling fudge.

Traverse City gives travelers a different version of the Great Lakes summer trip, with sandy beaches, boating, wineries, and easy access to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Both places have attracted visitors for generations, so they are hardly undiscovered. Their growth suggests travelers are actively choosing familiar Midwest vacation spots rather than treating them as backup plans.

National Parks and Major Events Are Driving Trips

In South Dakota and North Dakota, much of the growth is connected to outdoor trips.

Fora pointed to the Black Hills and Badlands National Park in South Dakota, along with Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. Theodore Roosevelt preserves three areas of rugged badlands, while Badlands National Park draws visitors for its unusual rock formations, fossils, prairie landscapes, wildlife, and night skies.

Missouri’s summer numbers have received an additional lift from Kansas City’s role as a FIFA World Cup host. The tournament runs from June 11 through July 19, with matches and an official fan festival bringing visitors to the city.

Ohio’s growth is being driven by a mix of family attractions and events, including trips built around Cedar Point and Great Wolf Lodge, according to the Fora report.

This does not mean travelers have suddenly abandoned Florida, California, or Hawaii. All three remain among Fora’s five most-booked U.S. states this summer, along with New York and Texas.

The more interesting shift is that travelers appear willing to build a summer vacation around a wider mix of experiences. Beaches still matter, but so do national parks, amusement parks, concerts, sporting events, food, and places where several of those things can be combined into one trip.

Late-Summer Travelers May Need to Plan Ahead

Some of these destinations are not easy places to book at the last minute.

Michigan’s official tourism site warns that lodging and campgrounds around Mackinac Island, Lake Michigan, and the state’s national lakeshores frequently fill months ahead during summer.

Chicago may offer more flexibility because of its size and hotel inventory, although major festivals and event weekends can still push prices higher.

The Midwest is not gaining attention because travelers have stopped wanting beaches, good food, and a packed summer calendar. Chicago’s rise proves they do not necessarily need to fly to a coast to find them.
