The 20 Best U.S. Summer Travel Destinations for 2026 Were Just Ranked — Here’s the Countdown
WalletHub compared 100 metro areas using travel costs, local prices, attractions, weather, activities, and safety.

Summer travel sounds great until the hotel total loads.
A new WalletHub report ranked the best summer travel destinations for 2026, comparing 100 of the largest metro areas in the U.S. across 41 indicators. The ranking looked at travel costs and hassles, local costs, attractions, weather, activities, and safety.
That means this list is less about dream-trip scenery and more about places where the numbers actually work. Here are the top 20 summer travel destinations for 2026, according to WalletHub.
The 20 Best U.S. Summer Travel Destinations, Ranked

20. Houston, Texas
Houston ranked No. 20 overall, helped by strong scores for attractions and local costs. It ranked seventh for attractions and 13th for local costs.
This is a good reminder that expensive flights are only one part of the summer travel equation. Once you are there, Houston can be relatively reasonable for dining, hotels, and things to do.
19. San Diego, California
San Diego came in at No. 19, with some of the strongest travel and activity scores in the country. It ranked third for travel costs and hassles, fifth for attractions, and fourth for activities.
The tradeoff is local cost. San Diego ranked 94th in that category, so this is not exactly the budget pick once you land. Still, between the beaches, Balboa Park, La Jolla, Coronado, and year-round outdoor appeal, it is easy to see why it ranked this high.
I’ve spent time in San Diego myself and put together a full guide to what to do there, including the beaches, neighborhoods, and classic first-timer stops worth prioritizing.

18. Raleigh, North Carolina
Raleigh ranked No. 18 and performed well for travel costs, weather, and safety. It landed 21st for safety and 22nd for weather.
This is one of those places that makes sense for a low-drama summer trip. You get restaurants, museums, green spaces, and easy access to other parts of North Carolina without dealing with the pricing or pace of a larger East Coast city. Plus, it was recently named one of the friendliest cities in the country.

17. Omaha, Nebraska
Omaha ranked No. 17, helped by low local costs. It ranked eighth in that category, which matters when hotels, meals, and gas are all part of the trip budget.
This is not the flashiest name on the list, but it has a solid case for families and travelers who want something affordable. The Henry Doorly Zoo alone gives Omaha a real summer-trip argument.

16. New York City
New York ranked No. 16, which feels both surprising and not surprising at all. It ranked sixth for attractions and fifth for activities, but 88th for local costs.
So yes, the city is expensive. No one needed a report to confirm that. But if you are trying to pack a lot into one trip, New York still has a ridiculous amount to do in a relatively small area.

15. Tulsa, Oklahoma
Tulsa came in at No. 15 and ranked second for local costs. It also ranked 17th for travel costs and hassles.
This is a practical summer pick for travelers who want a cheaper city getaway. The lower costs help, and Tulsa has enough museums, restaurants, live music, and Route 66 history to fill a long weekend.

14. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Pittsburgh ranked No. 14 and performed especially well for safety and activities. It ranked eighth for safety and 12th for activities.
This is a solid pick for travelers who like city views, museums, sports, and neighborhoods with plenty of character. It also tends to feel more approachable than some bigger Northeast cities.

13. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Oklahoma City took the No. 13 and earned the top spot for local costs. It also ranked 17th for weather and 27th for travel costs and hassles.
That affordability is the big story here. For travelers trying to keep a summer trip from spiraling, Oklahoma City gives you restaurants, museums, parks, and Western history without the sticker shock.

12. St. Louis, Missouri-Illinois
St. Louis came in at No. 12, with strong scores for weather and activities. It ranked 12th for weather and 17th for activities.
For families, St. Louis has a lot going for it. The zoo, Gateway Arch, museums, parks, and baseball make it easy to build a trip without relying on one big-ticket attraction.

11. San Antonio-New Braunfels, Texas
San Antonio ranked No. 11 overall and performed especially well for local costs. It ranked 12th in that category and 20th for attractions.
The River Walk is the obvious draw, but San Antonio has more range than people sometimes give it credit for. History, food, missions, museums, and nearby Hill Country stops all help it work as a summer trip.
10. Richmond, Virginia
Richmond took the No. 10 spot, with solid marks across the board. It ranked 18th for travel costs and hassles, 25th for safety, and 32nd for weather.
This feels like a good pick for travelers who want a city trip that still feels manageable. Richmond has history, restaurants, riverfront areas, and enough going on for a long weekend without the pricing of a larger East Coast city.

9. Cincinnati, Ohio
Cincinnati ranked No. 9 overall and performed especially well for activities, where it landed sixth. It also ranked 15th for safety and 28th for local costs.
For a summer trip, Cincinnati is easy to overlook. But between the riverfront, museums, baseball, breweries, and neighborhoods like Over-the-Rhine, it has more than enough for a budget-conscious city getaway.

8. Salt Lake City, Utah
Salt Lake City came in at No. 8, helped by strong weather and local cost scores. It ranked 11th for weather and 38th for local costs.
This is one of the better picks on the list for travelers who want access to the outdoors without skipping city comforts. You can build a trip around hiking, scenic drives, restaurants, or museums without making the logistics overly complicated.

7. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Philadelphia ranked No. 7 and performed especially well for travel costs and hassles, landing seventh in that category. It also ranked 13th for attractions.
Philly is a practical summer city trip, especially if you like history and museums. The food scene is strong, the neighborhoods have plenty of character, and several major attractions are easy to group together in one day.

6. Tampa, Florida
Tampa landed at No. 6, giving Florida another strong showing near the top of the list. It ranked 14th for activities and 23rd for safety.
This is a good pick for travelers who want a warm-weather trip with beaches nearby, but still want restaurants, museums, boat tours, and day trip options. Summer heat is part of the deal, so this is one where morning plans and pool time earn their keep.

5. Urban Honolulu, Hawaii
Urban Honolulu ranked No. 5 overall, with one of the more interesting score splits in the report. It ranked first for travel costs and hassles and first for weather, but 99th for local costs.
So, the trip may be easier to reach than people assume, but the on-the-ground prices are still going to feel like Hawaii. For travelers who can make the budget work, Honolulu also ranked second for activities.

4. Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. came in at No. 4 and ranked 10th for travel costs and hassles. It also performed well for attractions, weather, and activities.
D.C. can be a strong summer value because so many of the big museums and monuments are free. The heat can be a lot, but it is one of the easier cities to plan without paying for a ticketed activity every few hours.

3. Austin, Texas
Austin ranked landed in the top 3, with especially strong scores for attractions and local costs. It landed 10th for attractions and 21st for local costs.
WalletHub noted that Austin has a good supply of affordable, highly rated restaurants, which helps on a summer trip when food costs add up fast. The city also brings in music venues, food festivals, hiking trails, and a casual vacation feel. There are a ton of fun things to do in Austin.

2. Orlando, Florida
Orlando took the No. 2 spot and ranked first for activities. WalletHub pointed to water parks, boat tours, ice cream shops, coffee shops, shopping centers, and spas as part of its strong showing.
The theme parks are the obvious draw, but Orlando also ranked 24th for local costs. WalletHub noted that the lowest nightly rate for a three-star hotel room was $49, though park tickets can still change the total trip cost quickly. (There is a lot to do in Florida beyond the amusement parks!)

1. Atlanta, Georgia
Atlanta ranked as the best summer travel destination in the U.S. for 2026. The metro area earned the highest overall score in WalletHub’s report, with strong marks for attractions, weather, activities, and travel convenience.
WalletHub noted that short flights from major cities can be direct and cost as little as $317. The city also ranked well for shopping centers, wellness centers, ice cream shops, and swimming pools, which all help during a hot summer trip.
