Travelers Are Sharing the Destinations With the Best Bang for Your Buck — ‘4-Star Hotels for Under $50’
A viral thread has travelers naming the places where your money actually feels well spent.
A lot of travel talk online boils down to “this country is cheap” or “that city is expensive.” But one recent thread asked a more useful question: where did you actually feel like you got the best value for your money?
The original poster defined “high bang for your buck” as places where:
- You spent a lot but felt it was worth the price, or
- You didn’t spend much and still had an amazing experience.
Hundreds of travelers weighed in with their own picks. Some destinations were obvious, some were a little surprising, and a few came up so many times they’re hard to ignore.
Here are the cities and countries travelers say delivered the most value for what they paid.

1. Mexico City, Mexico
Mexico City was one of the most-mentioned destinations in the entire thread. Travelers said they were shocked by how much they could do in just a few days without burning through their budget.
One commenter said they “did so much for so little,” listing Chapultepec Castle, Bosque de Chapultepec, Palacio de Bellas Artes, libraries, and great restaurants, plus street tacos and elote. They added that museum tickets were around $5 and that even “fancier dinners with drinks and appetizers” stayed under $100 for the table.
Others pointed out that rideshares are “super cheap” yet still feel safe and reliable, while the metro can cost the equivalent of a few coins per ride. Several travelers said their favorite thing to do was simply walk around, snack their way through street food stands, and hang out in parks and cafés.
2. Chiang Mai, Thailand (and Thailand in general)
One traveler called Chiang Mai their best value pick and summed it up as “daily massages and great food for very cheap.” Even splurges like cooking classes and ethical elephant experiences were described as surprisingly affordable. Another user remembered a “luxury hotel room for $40 a night” and said that all the main attractions were “inexpensive and fabulous.”
Massages came up repeatedly: the original poster said Thai massages were “top notch” at roughly $10 per hour in many places. Travelers also mentioned that even with golf fees, rental clubs, and a caddie, a full day on the course costs less than a basic round at home.
Thailand is also my top “bang for your buck” destination out of all that I have visited. I wholeheartedly agree with this one. There are so many great things to do in Thailand that are affordable! Especially for food and accommodation. Check out, below, the amazing resort on a private island in Phuket that let me use Marriott points to book (and was still vastly cheaper than anything I could have booked like this at home).

3. Vietnam
Vietnam also ranked high on the value scoreboard. Several commenters praised the food, transit, and overall experience for the price.
One user called Vietnam a best-in-class destination, saying it has “top 3 cuisine in the world” and easy transportation between cities. Others highlighted that you can move between places like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An, eat incredibly well, and still spend less than you might on a low-key domestic city break in North America.
For travelers who want strong culture, scenery and food without a brutal daily spend, Vietnam was a repeat recommendation. beyond, Vietnam consistently landed in that sweet spot of affordable, exciting, and deeply memorable.

4. Cambodia’s Angkor Region
If you measure value by “how epic was this compared to what I paid,” the Angkor area in Cambodia ranked near the top.
One traveler picked Cambodia as their “highest” bang-for-buck destination and said costs at Angkor are extremely low compared with the scale of what you’re seeing. Passes to the temple complex, local food, and basic accommodation were all described as reasonable — especially for what many consider one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world.
For budget-minded travelers chasing big “bucket list” moments, that contrast between price and impact is a major selling point.

5. Taiwan
Taiwan popped up repeatedly as an underrated bargain, especially compared with some of its neighbors.
One commenter said Taiwan was their best value destination thanks to “incredible food for dirt cheap, reasonable accommodation prices, [and] cheap transport across the country.” Night markets, intercity trains, day trips to the coast and mountain scenery all factored into the appeal.
Another traveler simply chimed in with an enthusiastic “Taiwan NO 1!!!” — which pretty much sums up the energy of the people recommending it.

6. Argentina (Especially During the Blue Dollar Era)
Multiple travelers said that up through 2023, Argentina was by far their best bang-for-buck trip thanks to the currency situation. One person remembered drinking “world-class cocktails in Buenos Aires at $4 each,” while another said they brought about $245 in cash for six days and still went home with money left over.
Several users pointed out that this window seems to have closed and that prices have moved closer to Southern Europe levels. But for the people who went at the right moment, Argentina felt almost unreal in terms of cost vs. experience.
This is another one that I would agree with. Up until very recently, food and accommodation in Argentina were incredibly cheap. However, getting around Argentina is not exactly inexpensive. It is an amazing country that still deserves to be on your bucket list, though! As someone who lived there, this is my ultimate Argentina itinerary for first-time visitors.

7. Romania and Eastern Europe’s Unsung Cities
Eastern Europe earned plenty of love from travelers chasing value, and Romania was one of the standout mentions.
One commenter said that for Europe, Romania offered cheap food, hotels, and transportation, with fewer tourists but all the charm they wanted. Others highlighted Bosnia, Macedonia, Albania, and Hungary as places where you still get historic cities, lively nightlife, and solid dining for a fraction of what you’d pay in Western Europe.
Another user, reminiscing about Hungary, said it was the only country they’d visited where even the obvious tourist restaurants were affordable and still good.

8. Japan’s Smaller Cities
Japan has a reputation for being pricey, but several travelers argued that once you step away from the most touristed parts of Tokyo, the value is surprisingly strong.
One user said their “highest” value experiences were in medium and small cities like Hiroshima, Hakata, Aomori, and Hachinohe. Another commenter picked Japan as their top bang-for-buck country overall, pointing to “amazing food at relatively low prices considering the quality” and niche hobby stores where you can easily lose hours browsing.
For many travelers, Japan is one of the few places where they’re happy to pay a little more upfront because the quality of the food, service, and infrastructure stays consistently high.

9. Tunisia
Tunisia doesn’t get nearly as much attention as other Mediterranean destinations, but one traveler said it gave them the highest bang for their buck.
They described being able to eat out all day in a coastal resort town for the equivalent of around £6. They also mentioned paying about £60 for a private taxi from Hammamet to Tunis and still feeling it was great value considering the comfort and flexibility.
Compared with Western Europe’s coastal hotspots, that mix of low prices, beaches, and history made Tunisia feel like a smart alternative.

10. Kraków, Poland
For European city breaks, Kraków was a favorite among travelers who responded to the thread.
One commenter said Kraków had the best return on investment thanks to a strong “food & beer scene” and tours and cultural sites that didn’t feel overpriced. They loved that it still felt like a real city where “locals [were] doing local things,” especially outside of peak summer.
With historic architecture, day trips to the countryside, and more reasonable prices than many Western capitals, Kraków stood out as a solid picks-for-the-price destination.
Honorable Mentions
Other destinations that kept popping up as great value:
- Bali and non-touristy Indonesian cities
- Cape Town, South Africa
- Morocco and Egypt
- Nicaragua, Bolivia, Guatemala, and Belize’s Caye Caulker
The overall takeaway from the thread: if you’re willing to look slightly beyond the usual “capital + Instagram hotspot” itinerary, there are still plenty of places where your money stretches — and the experience matches (or beats) what you’d get in more expensive locales.
