A Travel Expert Shared 10 Vacation ‘Dupes’ That Could Save You Hundreds
Think you need to spend a fortune to check off your bucket list? Think again. A growing number of travelers are ditching overpriced hot spots and opting for “destination dupes” instead—lesser-known (and far more affordable) alternatives to popular vacation spots that deliver a surprisingly similar experience.
According to Fred Harrington, a finance expert at the digital savings platform SaveMyCent, this travel trend is not only a savvy money move, it’s a great way to avoid the tourist crowds, too.
“Swapping big-name destinations for lesser-known alternatives can cut travel costs by 30 to 50%, particularly on accommodation and meals,” says Harrington. “Plus, you’ll usually experience a much more authentic version of local life.”
Here are 10 travel dupes that look and feel like the real thing, without the giant price tag.
1. Thailand → Vietnam

Love Thailand’s beaches, temples, and night markets? Vietnam offers a similar Southeast Asian vibe, but with even lower prices. From the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An to the dramatic cliffs of Ha Long Bay, you’ll find incredible scenery, flavorful cuisine, and fewer crowds.
“Vietnam offers a similar experience for even more affordable prices,” says Fred.
And if you’re still tempted by Thailand, there are ways to enjoy it without splurging—this luxe resort dupe we found is giving total White Lotus vibes.
2. Turkey → Albania
Albania’s laid-back Mediterranean charm is often compared to Turkey’s, minus the crowds and high prices. The Albanian Riviera is a hidden gem, with turquoise waters, dramatic coastline, and charming historical towns like Berat and Gjirokastër.
“Albania is rapidly gaining traction as one of Europe’s best-value beach destinations,” Fred notes.
3. Greece → Bulgaria (Black Sea Coast)
Instead of splurging on a Greek island getaway, consider Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. Resorts like Sunny Beach and Sozopol offer sandy shores, nightlife, and sea views—at a fraction of the cost of Santorini or Mykonos.
4. Maldives → The Philippines
Overwater bungalows and turquoise lagoons don’t have to break the bank. The Philippines, with its stunning islands like Palawan and Siargao, offers all the beauty of the Maldives at mid-range hotel prices.
5. Paris → Budapest
Paris might be the city of love, but Budapest delivers on charm, riverfront strolls, romantic architecture, and incredible cafés, without the Parisian price tag. Plus, you can soak in famous thermal spas that are unique to the Hungarian capital.
“Budapest offers affordable hotels and much cheaper (but still amazing) wine,” Fred adds.
6. Amsterdam → Kraków, Poland
If you’re after charming canals, cobblestone streets, and culture galore, Kraków is a fantastic (and much cheaper) alternative to Amsterdam. It’s rich in history, nightlife, and museums—and Polish beer costs a lot less, too.
7. Australia → South Africa
Dreaming of beaches, road trips, and outdoor adventures? South Africa rivals Australia’s natural beauty and wildlife, without the sky-high flight prices and costly stays. Cities like Cape Town offer seaside charm and mountain views on a much friendlier budget.
8. Bali → Sri Lanka
If you’ve been thinking about Bali, consider Sri Lanka instead. It’s home to beaches, spiritual retreats, tea plantations, and surfing hotspots like Arugam Bay—often at significantly lower costs, and with just as much wow-factor.
9. Spain → Bosnia & Herzegovina
Spain’s culture and cuisine are legendary, but Bosnia & Herzegovina offers similarly warm hospitality, beautiful landscapes, and rich history. Explore Sarajevo’s old town or take in the stunning Kravica waterfalls—without draining your travel fund.
10. Mexico → Guatemala
Guatemala brings the color, culture, and cuisine many love about Mexico—but at a lower cost and often with added peace of mind. From the colonial streets of Antigua to the serene beauty of Lake Atitlán and the ancient ruins of Tikal, it’s a destination that’s just as captivating.
“Guatemala also lacks much of the drug cartel violence that plagues Mexico, making it a much safer option for travelers,” Fred points out.
Fred also suggests a few travel hacks for getting the best deals:
“Check regional airports—you can sometimes find direct routes to these dupe locations, especially in Europe. Booking stays in local guesthouses instead of big hotel chains and traveling during shoulder seasons can also stretch your budget much further.”
So, whether you’re craving island adventures or European charm, there’s a more affordable version out there waiting to be explored.
