He Didn’t Tell His Wife He Works With Her Favorite Celebrity — and It Blew Up Her Birthday Party
A man’s new client should’ve been a dream come true for his wife. But instead, it blew up her birthday party, and their marriage is now on shaky ground.

In a recent post on an online forum, a 31-year-old man explained that he works in a public-facing role with high-net-worth clients, including influencers and celebrities. His wife, 32, has been “obsessed” with a particular musician “for the entirety of their career” – to the point where she can recite most of their lyrics by heart and has spent whole days trying to find them in person by tracking their Instagram posts whenever they visit her city.
Recently, that musician became one of his clients. He met them in person for “strictly professional meetings” and, as part of his job, now has access to their personal contact information, address, and other private details through his work phone and computer.
He chose not to tell his wife.
Why? Because she once admitted she had “lightly stalked” this musician during her first divorce, and he was worried that sharing anything about his work with her would be crossing a line, both professionally and ethically.
“I purposefully withheld this information from my wife… and thought it was inappropriate to share with a super fan,” he wrote.
The Birthday Party Meltdown
Things came to a head at his wife’s recent birthday party.
In the middle of the celebration, he got a call from the musician’s rep. He excused himself and stepped into a private room to take it, not realizing his wife had followed him and listened to the entire conversation.
When he came back, the party was effectively over.
According to his post, his wife became “belligerent, screaming, crying and cursing” about how he could possibly keep something this big from her, especially when this musician has been her “idol since she was young.” She confronted him in front of her friends and family, and the party fizzled out about thirty minutes later.

He told her she’d crossed a boundary by eavesdropping and that he wasn’t going to hash this out in front of everyone. Since then, every attempt to talk about it has gone nowhere.
His wife insists he was wrong not to tell her because the musician’s association with his job is “publicly available information.” To her, that means he didn’t trust her… and she’s right about that part. He admits he didn’t trust her not to misuse the information, especially given her own admission that she’d “lightly stalked” the celebrity in the past.
Their friends and family are split down the middle: some think he was cruel to hide it and dismiss her feelings on her birthday, while others think he absolutely did the right thing to protect his job and his client.
So he turned to Reddit to ask: Am I the ***hole for not telling my wife I work with her favorite celebrity?
Reddit Didn’t Hold Back About the Wife’s Behavior
If he was expecting a close call, he didn’t get one. The top comments are overwhelmingly on his side.
Many people pointed out that his wife’s reaction proved exactly why he didn’t feel comfortable telling her.
One commenter, who also works with high-net-worth individuals, said it would be “wholly unprofessional” to disclose this kind of information to anyone, even a spouse, and that it could easily violate confidentiality expectations or NDAs.

Another warned that if the wife ever used information from his phone or computer to approach the celebrity, he could be fired and “blacklisted” from his industry, and his company could lose major clients.
“You laid out some really troubling behavior from your wife that would make me ‘hide’ information like this for the sake of my own job,” one person wrote, noting that her meltdown in front of a house full of guests is “world-class” red-flag behavior.
Parasocial Obsession vs Real-World Boundaries
Several commenters zeroed in on the “lightly stalked” line. For them, that phrase alone justified his decision to keep his work discreet.
His wife admitted she spent time trying to track this musician’s movements based on social media posts and stopped “when she became stable again.” That language struck a lot of people as alarming.
“She stopped when she became stable again,” one person quoted back. “Brother, she’s a long way from stable.”
More than a few suggested that she needs professional help to address what looks like an unhealthy parasocial attachment – the kind of intense one-sided relationship people form with celebrities they don’t actually know.

One commenter put it bluntly:
“People like your wife are a security risk to celebrities, and her reaction proves it.”
Others pointed out that even outside the celebrity context, there’s a bigger question here: if he can’t trust his wife with something this significant, what else is going on in the marriage? A small minority felt that everyone bears some responsibility – that he should’ve either refused the client from the beginning, or had a serious conversation with his wife about boundaries instead of hiding it.
But even that group still acknowledged that telling her, then watching her try to exploit the connection, could have been a disaster for his career.
In the end, the verdict from the comment section was clear: he was not in the wrong.
Readers felt he was doing what any professional in his position should do, protecting his client’s privacy and his own livelihood, especially given his wife’s past behavior and extreme reaction.
If anything, the incident has turned the spotlight back on her. Between the stalking admission, the birthday meltdown, and the refusal to acknowledge that his job has real confidentiality expectations, many people think the couple isn’t just dealing with a one-off fight about a musician.
They’re staring down much bigger questions about trust, boundaries, and what happens when a fantasy relationship with a celebrity starts bleeding into real life.

A holiday white elephant exchange is supposed to be a little ridiculous and mildly competitive in the “I will absolutely steal that candle warmer” kind of way. But one person walked into a $25 gift swap expecting the usual mix of fun and useful… and walked out very disappointed.
