Once People Tried These “Luxury” Upgrades, They Said the Budget Version Was Ruined for Good
These are the upgrades people say permanently raised their standards.

Sometimes “luxury” means a five-star resort. Sometimes it means finally buying toilet paper that does not feel like sandpaper or realizing a heated steering wheel can change your entire winter.
That was the mood when people were asked on a viral social media post to name a luxury they had experienced once and now could not go back to the budget version of. The answers ranged from travel splurges to home upgrades to pantry staples, and a lot of them were very relatable.
The 10 Best “Luxury” Upgrades People Say They Can’t Quit, Ranked

10. Good toilet paper
Not every answer was glamorous, but this one got right to the point. One person joked, “Everyone else is like, ‘bidet, first class airline, 4 star hotels!’ And I just like good toilet paper.”
Another admitted they grew up with cheap one-ply, kept buying it on their own for years, and only realized the difference after finally switching to 2-ply: “I had no idea there was a difference!”

9. Better food staples
A lot of people said once they tried the good version of an everyday food item, the cheap stuff was over. “Real” maple syrup came up more than once, and one person put it perfectly: “Having grown up on Aunt Jemima and Log Cabin I can never go back. I will literally bring a tiny bottle of maple syrup with me if I think that the place is not gonna have it.”
Irish butter, fresh guacamole, imported pecorino romano, better coffee, and even Duke’s mayo all got shout-outs, too. One person summed it up this way: “Life’s too short to be drinking the cheap stuff.”

8. Upgraded car features
This category had a lot of fans, especially among people who live somewhere with real winter. Heated seats, backup cameras, self-dimming mirrors, remote start, and heated steering wheels all made the list.
One person said their heated steering wheel was a game changer because “Arthritis in my fingers makes cold painful. The heated steering wheel helps immensely!” Another summed up the rest of the category in two words: “Rear view cameras.”

7. A washer and dryer at home
“A washer and dryer in the home,” one person wrote. “I remember hours spent at the laundromat as a college student.”
That answer probably landed with anyone who has had to drag laundry baskets across an apartment complex or sit around guarding a machine for an afternoon. A few of the other home-related answers had that same energy, too, including tankless water heaters, double vanities, and simply having more than one bathroom.

6. Paying someone else to do the worst chores
A surprising number of people said the real luxury is handing off the tasks you hate most. Movers came up more than once, as did lawn care and house cleaning.
One person wrote, “Well, I just paid someone to mow my grass for the first time in my life 2 days ago.. think I’ll just keep doing that…..” Another said of their twice-monthly cleaner, “I’m a Queen twice a month.”

5. A nicer hotel room
Travel upgrades came up a lot, and hotel comfort was one of the big ones. Once people get used to better beds, better sheets, and a room that actually feels restful, going back gets a lot less appealing.
Some answers were short and told you everything you needed to know. One person simply said, “The beach,” while another said, “A hotel, after years of camping,” which feels like a whole story in five words.

4. Cruise balconies and better views
Cruise fans were especially united here. More than one person said that after booking a balcony room, inside cabins were basically ruined for them.
One answer said it plainly: “Cruise ship balconies instead of inside rooms.” Another echoed it with, “Balcony room on a cruise.”
3. Bidets
Bidets may have been the clearest consensus answer in the whole thread. Once people try one, they tend to become very committed to the idea.
One person wrote, “Having a bidet. In the U.S. they’re rarely seen, but after installing one I’ll never go back.” Another kept it even simpler: “Once you go bidet, there’s no other way.” And then there was the person who added, “I realized that I had been uncivilized for my entire life until that point.”

2. Business class or first class flights
Flights were always going to make this list. Once people experience more space, better service, and the possibility of actually sleeping on a plane, regular economy becomes a much tougher sell.
One traveler said, “Business class on international flights,” while another admitted, “I can go down to premium but as my hubby calls it baggage class is a no go.” “Baggage class” is brutal, but you know exactly what she means.

1. A beach with actually clear water
This was one of the most memorable answers because it was so specific. One person said they grew up going to Myrtle Beach and Virginia Beach, but after snorkeling in the Caribbean, they could not look at murky water the same way again.
Their explanation was hard to beat: “After snorkeling in the crystal clear water of the Caribbean, it’s hard to go back to water where, if it’s up to your knees, you can’t see your feet.” I agree with this one – recently snorkeling in Curaçao was a game-changer for me. (Check it out in the video below.)
A few other answers that easily could have made this list: adult-only resorts, orchestra seats at the theater, luxury cruises, heated towels, fresh-ground coffee, and a really good hand-held shower head.
And if this kind of conversation is your thing, the internet has also been debating the so-called luxury add-ons people are tired of paying for, along with the subtle signs someone seemed rich back in the ’90s.
