The 10 U.S. Cities With the Most Expensive Hotel Stays
Looking to book a getaway? Depending on where you’re headed, you might want to brace yourself before hitting “confirm” on that hotel reservation.

Boutique Hotel Hub recently analyzed Booking.com data for cities with populations over 100,000 to find the average cost for a one-night stay in three, four, and five-star hotels, and some of the results are a little surprising.
While a few of these spots are obvious tourist hotspots, others might leave you wondering why the nightly rates are so high. Let’s count down from #10 to the priciest place to stay in the U.S.
10. Boston, Massachusetts – $317 per night
Boston is no stranger to steep prices, but $317 is the average for a three-to-five-star hotel here. Five-star properties will set you back around $624 per night, while three-star options hover around $274. At least the city delivers plenty of history, sports, and seafood to soften the blow.

9. Los Angeles, California – $319 per night
From Hollywood to the beaches, L.A. is a classic getaway—but it comes at a cost. A five-star stay here averages $647 per night, while a three-star hotel still runs about $243. You’re paying for the sunshine and the star power.

8. Lynn, Massachusetts – $331 per night
Lynn may not be as famous as Boston, but its hotel prices could give the big city a run for its money. Expect to pay $624 per night for a five-star stay or $289 for a three-star.

7. Paterson, New Jersey – $334 per night
Paterson might not be the first place you think of for a pricey getaway, but hotels here average $334 a night. Five-star options can hit $730, while three-star stays cost about $241.

6. Quincy, Massachusetts – $335 per night
Just outside Boston, Quincy offers easy access to the city without being right in the middle of the hustle—and yet, it’s still expensive. A five-star hotel here averages $624 per night, and even a three-star runs $294.

5. Newark, New Jersey – $338 per night
Newark’s proximity to New York City likely plays a role in its $338 average nightly rate. A five-star stay comes in at $726, and three-star hotels average $249.

4. Yonkers, New York – $345 per night
Located just north of NYC, Yonkers isn’t exactly a budget traveler’s dream either. Five-star hotels here average $717 per night, with three-star stays costing about $257.

3. Elizabeth, New Jersey – $352 per night
Elizabeth claims the #3 spot with an average nightly rate of $352. A luxury five-star experience here runs around $726, while three-star options average $252.

2. Honolulu, Hawaii – $359 per night
It’s no shock Honolulu ranks high—this island paradise is in demand year-round. A five-star hotel will set you back a staggering $1,139 per night, while a three-star option averages $273.

1. New York City, New York – $396 per night
No surprise here—NYC tops the list at nearly $400 a night on average for a three-to-five-star hotel. Luxury travelers can expect to pay around $726 per night for a five-star stay, while three-star options run $297.
While these cities have some of the steepest hotel prices in the country, there are still ways to visit without blowing your budget. Opting for three-star accommodations, booking in the off-season, or looking just outside the city center can make a big difference in your nightly rate.
For comparison, the cheapest city in the study—Wichita Falls, Texas—averaged just $108 per night. Now that’s a deal.
