Before you go grabbing your passport and planning your next big adventure, a new study might give you pause, at least long enough to do a little extra research. Life insurance experts at Everly Life just released a ranking of the most dangerous travel destinations for 2025, based on a combination of risk factors like crime, traffic fatalities, healthcare quality, human trafficking, and sexual assault rates.
Now, I want to be clear: just because a destination made this list doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go.
This list isn’t meant to scare you off…it’s here to help you travel smart. Understanding the risks ahead of time allows you to better prepare and stay safe, so you can focus on the amazing parts of the trip. A little caution goes a long way when it comes to international travel.
Here are the top 10 most dangerous countries for travelers in 2025, starting with number 10.
10. Morocco – Travel Danger Score: 53
With its colorful medinas, sweeping desert landscapes, and bustling souks, Morocco is a dream destination for many travelers. But according to this study, it comes with some serious safety considerations. The country’s overall crime index sits at 50.5, and while sexual assault rates were not listed, traffic fatalities are high at 19.9 per 100,000 people.
Healthcare quality is also on the lower end, with a healthcare index of just 39.3. While Morocco is still a very popular destination, and for good reason, this data is a reminder to stay alert in crowded areas, choose reputable transportation options, and invest in solid travel insurance.
9. Thailand – Travel Danger Score: 55
Thailand is known for its vibrant street food scene, stunning beaches, and rich cultural history. But behind all that postcard-perfect beauty are some sobering safety stats. With a traffic death rate of 32.2 per 100,000 people, the highest on this list, it’s worth thinking twice before hopping on a motorbike or tuk-tuk without proper precautions.
The country also has a moderate crime index of 44.3 and a relatively low healthcare rating of 38.4. That said, millions of travelers visit Thailand safely every year, including me. I had a wonderful experience exploring the country, and I still think it’s an incredible place to visit. Just make sure to exercise extra caution on the roads and take time to learn local laws and customs.

8. Malaysia – Travel Danger Score: 57
Malaysia’s mix of modern cities and lush rainforests attracts all kinds of travelers. But according to this study, it’s one of the more dangerous places to visit in 2025. The crime index is fairly high at 57.7, and the healthcare system scores only a 39.1, something to consider if you’re planning adventure activities or traveling with pre-existing health conditions.
Malaysia also has a relatively high human trafficking score (4.6), a factor that contributed to its position on this list. If you’re heading to Malaysia, be mindful of scams, stick to well-reviewed accommodations, and avoid isolated areas at night.
7. Cambodia – Travel Danger Score: 57
Cambodia’s ancient temples and scenic countryside make it a magnet for history buffs and backpackers. But it ranks high in travel danger due to a combination of crime, weak healthcare infrastructure (healthcare index: 31.1), and a notable trafficking score (6.4).
The country also reports a high rate of traffic-related deaths at 15.5 per 100,000. While locals are famously friendly and welcoming, travelers should be especially cautious when it comes to road travel and medical needs, and make sure to pack a well-stocked first aid kit.
6. Argentina – Travel Danger Score: 58
Argentina is a bucket list country for tango, wine, and breathtaking natural wonders like Patagonia and Iguazú Falls. But it also ranked surprisingly high on the danger scale. Its crime index is a concerning 61.0, and it has one of the higher reported sexual assault rates on the list…31.9 per 100,000.
The healthcare system is relatively better than others on this list, with a score of 58.3. Still, visitors should be aware of petty crime, especially in larger cities like Buenos Aires, and avoid displaying valuables in public. (I have a whole article on what to wear when you are in Argentina.)
5. Mexico – Travel Danger Score: 58
Mexico continues to be one of the most visited countries in the world, but its safety issues are widely reported. The country scored high for crime (67.4 index), with common concerns including pickpocketing, scams, and cartel-related violence in certain regions.
Traffic deaths (14.7 per 100,000) and a human trafficking score of 4.2 also contributed to its ranking. While there are still many safe places to visit in Mexico, especially in tourist-friendly zones like Cancun and Mexico City, it’s crucial to research your destination thoroughly before you go.
4. Pakistan – Travel Danger Score: 59
Pakistan ties with Brazil in terms of overall risk, but for very different reasons. While the country does not report sexual assault rates, it has a very low healthcare index of 30.5 and a high human trafficking score of 6.1. Crime is also an issue, with a reported index of 46.2.
Pakistan’s rich cultural history and stunning mountain landscapes make it appealing to the more adventurous traveler, but this is definitely a destination where careful planning, local guides, and proper travel insurance are essential.
3. Brazil – Travel Danger Score: 59
Brazil has long been a dream destination for Carnival, the Amazon rainforest, and iconic beaches like Copacabana. But it also ranks third on this list due to its high crime rate (65.6) and a concerning number of sexual assaults—27.9 per 100,000 population.
Traffic fatalities (15.7 per 100,000) and a human trafficking score of 5.0 further add to the risks. That said, Brazil does have a better healthcare index (43.1) than many others on this list. If you’re heading here, stay aware of your surroundings and consider traveling with a local guide, especially in major cities.
2. Iran – Travel Danger Score: 64
Iran comes in second, mostly due to poor healthcare (28.2) and one of the highest human trafficking scores on the list (7.5). The country also has high traffic death rates (20.6 per 100,000) and a crime index of 49.5.
Sexual assault data wasn’t available for this destination, but the broader safety metrics paint a concerning picture. Political instability and restrictive laws for foreigners—especially women—can add additional layers of risk. Iran’s historical and architectural wonders are breathtaking, but it’s a place where extensive research and local expertise are musts.
P.S. It’s worth noting that this study was released before the most recent escalation in tensions between Iran and the U.S.. Given the current geopolitical climate, many travelers may already be avoiding Iran altogether. At the top of the list is South Africa, with the highest danger score by a wide margin. The country has an alarming sexual assault rate of 88.5 per 100,000, by far the highest on this list, and the highest crime index at 75.4.
Traffic-related deaths are also a major concern at 24.5 per 100,000 people, and healthcare quality is low, with a score of just 33.2. South Africa’s natural beauty and vibrant cities still draw millions of tourists every year, but those who go should exercise a high degree of caution and take every possible safety measure, from choosing safe neighborhoods to hiring private transportation.
Travel Smart, Not Scared
Just because a country appears on this list doesn’t mean you should write it off completely. Many of these places offer unforgettable experiences…I recently visited Thailand and had a wonderful time, and I actually lived in Argentina for a while. There’s no question they’re worth visiting, but it’s important to go in informed and prepared.
A little caution can go a long way. Do your research, stick to trusted accommodations, register with your embassy, and stay aware of your surroundings.
