Tinder says Gen Z singles are using zodiac signs to date faster — but not for the reason you might think

Apparently, “what’s your sign?” is not dead. Tinder says younger daters are using zodiac signs as a shortcut on dating apps, and not always in the way people might assume.

As astrology content continues to rack up massive views on TikTok, Tinder says more singles are bringing zodiac language into their dating lives. The company calls the behavior “Astro Signaling,” where daters use zodiac traits to signal personality, not necessarily to rule people in or out.

Tinder’s early analysis, which looked at data from March 12 to April 15, 2026, found that more than 20% of users ages 18 to 22 adopted Astrology Mode, its zodiac-focused dating feature. The feature also saw higher adoption among LGBTQ+ users and beyond-binary users compared to other reported groups.

Users who selected LGBTQ+ orientations showed approximately 30% higher adoption rates than users who selected straight orientations, according to Tinder. Among users ages 18 to 22, beyond-binary users showed the highest adoption rates overall at approximately 30%.

Nearly 1 in 4 women ages 18 to 22 adopted Astrology Mode during the same period.

Astrology is becoming a dating icebreaker

For anyone who has spent more than 12 seconds on TikTok, this probably does not come as a shock. Astrology has become shorthand for personality, communication style, flirting style, emotional availability, and occasionally, why someone’s ex was “such a Scorpio.”

What is interesting about Tinder’s data is that zodiac compatibility did not appear to predict matching behavior neatly.

Tinder said traditionally “compatible” and “incompatible” zodiac sign pairings performed similarly in terms of matching behavior during the analysis period. In other words, users may not be treating astrology like a serious matchmaking formula.

“Astrology has become such a big part of how younger singles talk about identity, personality, and relationships that it naturally shows up in dating too,” Devyn Simone, Tinder’s resident dating expert, said in a statement. “What Tinder’s data suggests is that people may not be treating zodiac signs as a strict compatibility test, but rather as a fun, low-pressure way to spark conversation and learn more about someone.”

Simone added that for many singles, “it’s less about whether someone is technically your ‘perfect match’ and more about having a shared language to connect through.”

Some signs are starting more conversations

Tinder did share a few sign-specific details, but there isn’t a full ranking for every zodiac sign.

In Tinder’s analysis, Capricorn users showed the highest rates of conversation initiation. Leo, Scorpio, and Aries associated matches were linked to some of the longest conversations.

Leo, Scorpio, and Cancer also generated some of the highest match volumes.

Men and women adopted Astrology Mode at similar rates

One finding that stood out: Tinder said men and women adopted Astrology Mode at similar rates, at 6.68% and 6.49%, respectively.

That suggests zodiac-based dating behavior is not limited to one group of users. While younger women and beyond-binary users showed some of the highest adoption rates, interest in astrology-driven profile behavior appears to span across user groups.

Tinder also said Gen Z users showed approximately 32% higher adoption rates than Millennials.

That tracks with how astrology often functions online now. It is not always about a literal stars-aligning belief; sometimes it is humor, shorthand, or an easy way to say, “Here is how I see myself.”

Astrology may not predict the match, but it can start the chat

Dating apps can make people feel like they need to present a polished version of themselves in a tiny profile box. Zodiac signs give users something familiar, playful, and easy to respond to.

For anyone who has ever stared at a dating app match and had absolutely no idea what to say, that alone might explain why astrology keeps finding its way into modern dating. And if zodiac signs are already influencing how people date, it is probably not that much of a stretch that some travelers are using them to plan where to go next. The same internet language is showing up in other parts of daily life, too, including the way people talk about mental health online.

  1. It sounds like astrology is more of a fun way to connect than a real dating filter.
