Tripadvisor just ranked America’s top 10 winter getaways — here’s the countdown
The 2026–27 list includes beach escapes, big cities, and a few destinations you might not expect to see in winter.
Not everyone wants the same kind of winter vacation. Some travelers are looking for sunshine and beaches, while others are perfectly happy bundling up and exploring a city.
Tripadvisor recently released its 2026 Winter Travel Index, revealing the 10 most popular domestic destinations for the upcoming winter season.
I’ve visited several of these places myself, and I was surprised to see a couple of them make the list. Here’s how they ranked.

10. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
Pigeon Forge is a popular family vacation destination in the Smoky Mountains, with plenty to keep visitors busy even when temperatures drop.
Dollywood’s seasonal celebrations are a major attraction, especially during the holidays. The area is also packed with dinner shows, attractions, shopping, and cabin rentals, making it appealing for families who want a mountain getaway without sacrificing entertainment.
And with Great Smoky Mountains National Park nearby, there’s an opportunity to get outdoors when the weather cooperates.
9. Chicago, Illinois
I’ll admit, I was a little surprised to see Chicago make the winter list. I live in Wisconsin and visit the city regularly, so I know just how cold and windy it can get! (Although I will be heading there at the end of the month!)
But Chicago has a lot going for it during the holidays. Christkindlmarket, the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, and the city’s Christmas decorations make November and December particularly festive. There’s also ice skating, excellent restaurants, museums, and theater performances to enjoy throughout the winter.
I’ve visited Chicago many times and recently put together a three-day Chicago itinerary with some of my favorite things to do.
If you’re planning a first visit, I’d recommend starting with Millennium Park, the Chicago Cultural Center, and an architecture experience. Just be sure to pack a warm coat!

8. Miami, Florida
Miami is an easy city to understand on a winter travel ranking. While much of the country is bundling up, visitors here can enjoy warm temperatures, beaches, and outdoor dining.
South Beach is a major draw, but there’s plenty to see beyond the sand. The Art Deco Historic District, Wynwood’s murals, and Little Havana give travelers several different neighborhoods to explore.
Winter is also a particularly pleasant time to visit South Florida, with generally lower humidity than the summer months.

7. Honolulu, Hawaii
Honolulu offers the kind of winter weather that makes people seriously question why they live somewhere cold.
Waikiki Beach is a major attraction, with its hotels, restaurants, and views of Diamond Head. Visitors can also explore Pearl Harbor, hike to scenic viewpoints, and venture farther around Oahu to see beaches beyond Waikiki.
Winter is also whale-watching season in Hawaii, giving travelers another reason to visit during the cooler months.

6. New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans is another destination where winter can be a great time to visit, especially for travelers who would rather explore a city than sit beside a pool.
The French Quarter, live jazz, historic architecture, and famous restaurants are major draws throughout the year. The cooler weather also makes walking around the city much more comfortable than during the hot, humid summer.
Depending on when you visit, you might also catch the beginning of Mardi Gras season, which brings an entirely different energy to the city.
If you need some ideas for your trip, these are some of my favorite things to do in New Orleans.

5. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Fort Lauderdale comes in fifth, giving Florida another spot in Tripadvisor’s winter top 10.
The city is known for its beaches, waterfront restaurants, and extensive canal system, which has earned it the nickname “Venice of America.”
Visitors can take boat tours along the Intracoastal Waterway, spend time on Las Olas Boulevard, or simply enjoy the beach. It’s also a major cruise departure point, making it a convenient place to spend a few days before or after a Caribbean sailing.

4. Anaheim, California
Anaheim is best known as the home of Disneyland Resort, and that’s a big reason families visit throughout the year.
The holiday season is especially popular, with festive decorations, seasonal entertainment, and themed attractions throughout Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure.
Southern California’s mild winter weather is another bonus, although visitors should still prepare for cooler evenings and occasional rain.
For families planning a theme park vacation, Anaheim offers a winter getaway without the summer heat.

3. Key West, Florida
Key West takes third place, and it’s easy to see why this Florida Keys destination attracts winter travelers.
The island is known for its colorful historic homes, waterfront bars, sunsets, and laid-back atmosphere. Visitors can tour the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, explore Duval Street, or head out on the water for snorkeling, kayaking, and boat excursions.
One of the more memorable options is a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park, although you’ll want to arrange transportation well in advance.
With warm weather and a completely different pace from most major cities, Key West is an appealing winter escape.

2. Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas is one of those destinations that stays popular regardless of the season. There’s always something happening, with major shows, restaurants, casinos, and hotels drawing visitors throughout the year.
I recently visited the Las Vegas area and spent much of my trip exploring beyond the Strip. Valley of Fire State Park was a highlight, with its dramatic red sandstone formations and hiking trails. I also visited the Hoover Dam area and explored Black Canyon by boat.
These outdoor excursions are especially appealing during the cooler months, when hiking and sightseeing are much more comfortable than in the intense summer heat.
Of course, winter in Las Vegas isn’t necessarily warm. Temperatures can drop quite a bit after sunset, particularly if you’re planning to spend time outdoors.
I think Vegas is worth considering even if gambling and nightlife aren’t your thing. There are some really interesting experiences within a relatively short drive of the city.

1. New York City, New York
New York City claims the number one spot on Tripadvisor’s winter ranking, and the holidays are a huge part of the appeal.
The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, Fifth Avenue window displays, holiday markets, and ice skating rinks draw visitors from around the world. There’s also the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and countless opportunities for holiday shopping.
But New York doesn’t lose its appeal once the decorations come down. Broadway shows, museums, restaurants, and famous landmarks keep visitors busy throughout the colder months.
Tripadvisor also ranked New York first for both Thanksgiving and the Christmas-to-New Year’s travel period, making it the clear favorite among U.S. winter destinations.

9 of the most unique places I’ve stayed around the world (and what they’re really like)
I’ve stayed in some pretty unusual places over the last 15 years of traveling. I’ve slept in a treehouse 53 feet above the Amazon rainforest, a dome tent in the Jordanian desert, and a castle in Ireland. But nothing quite prepared me for waking up to a giraffe sticking its head through my bedroom door, looking for breakfast.

Living in South Florida, I can definitely understand why so many people come here during the winter.
