U.S. Updates Its Travel Advisory for Greece — Here’s What to Know Before Your Trip

Here’s what the U.S. government just changed about traveling to one of Europe’s most popular destinations.

The U.S. Department of State has updated its travel advisory for Greece — and while the country remains one of the safest destinations in Europe for American travelers, there are a few new notes worth paying attention to.

Greece remains a Level 1 destination — but stay alert in busy areas

As of October 23, 2025, the advisory still ranks Greece at Level 1 (“exercise normal precautions”) — the lowest risk level available.

That means the U.S. government considers it a safe country overall. Still, the updated summary flags that petty crime remains common, especially in crowded tourist zones. Visitors are urged to keep an eye on their belongings and stay alert in popular spots like Athens’ Plaka neighborhood, the Acropolis area, and ferry ports.

Demonstrations can flare up unexpectedly

The advisory also highlights that large-scale demonstrations tied to local politics can happen with little warning. Earlier in October, the U.S. Embassy in Athens cautioned citizens about planned protests in Chania, Souda Bay, and Mouzouras, noting that even peaceful gatherings can escalate quickly. Travelers are advised to avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place, monitor local media for updates, and carry identification in case authorities request it.

Entry/Exit System begins biometric checks for U.S. travelers

Another major change this fall: Greece has begun rolling out the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES). Starting October 12, 2025, most U.S. citizens entering or leaving Greece for short stays will have their fingerprints and facial images digitally collected at the border. The goal is to streamline border management and improve security across the EU.

Visa-free stays still apply

The State Department confirms that Americans visiting for fewer than 90 days don’t need a visa. However, those holding official or diplomatic passports still require one.

Bottom line

Greece continues to be one of the safest, most beloved destinations for Americans — from Santorini’s sunset views to the monasteries of Meteora. The updated advisory doesn’t signal new risks, but it’s a good reminder to stay aware, especially in busy tourist areas or near demonstrations.
