We Bought a House!

New house

Well, we’re going to have to do some updates to the blog description…because we can no longer call ourselves “nomads.” My husband and I just bought our first house! That feels really weird to say, haha. Now, this doesn’t mean we’ll stop traveling by any means. It just means we’ll actually have somewhere to come home to now.

For today’s post, I’m going to do a little tour of the house via photos! Maybe once we get more situated (and more decorations) I can do a video tour if anyone is interested.

new house

We had been looking at homes constantly over the last couple months before we came across our dream house. It’s a new construction near Appleton, Wisconsin by Executive Developers and close to our families. It has a lot of unique features! It’s a great balance between the two of us. I really like modern homes, and my husband is more a fan of rustic homes. So, this house was a great combination of our wants.

Seeing as we’ve been living out of suitcases for the last 5 1/2 years…we don’t actually own any decorations or furniture. So, the house is rather empty right now. We did buy some living room furniture after our offer was accepted, and the bedroom set we bought from the owner/builder.

We’ve decided to take our time filling it, so it’ll likely be empty for a bit yet. If it wasn’t for my mom gifting me a ton of decorations from her home and also finding some fun antiques, this house would have a total of three decorations in it I think, haha. How cool is that antique trunk and old ledger she found? We think the ledger is from a doctor’s office. We still have to spend a bit more time going through it, though. (I actually used both of these pieces in Monday’s blog post, too!)

map bedroom set

This map bedspread is the first purchase I made for the house. I’ve always wanted a map/globe theme to my house. So, I was really excited about this! Sorry, this photo is awful, though. Click here to see what it looks like on the seller’s website.

map serving tray

And my mother and father in law actually made the map serving tray you see above. How cool is that? The copper piping looks incredible! I think these two need to go into business…right?

barn beam chandelier

The barn wood beam chandelier is unlike anything I had seen before! We were both blown away by this when we walked in. The builder of the home said they had taken the wood from an old barn in Crandon, Wisconsin.

ladder

We also have a fun little area above our living room that needs some decorations. And to get up there we have a library ladder! It actually moves as well.

kitchen

And we’re quite excited about the size of that kitchen, as you can see.

A big thank you to Commercial Silk International for sending me these lovely silk plants as well. Our home looks so much better with a little green inside! Their plants look incredibly real! (I actually had a couple people ask if they were, especially for that aloe plant.) And silk plants are exactly what I need as I can’t keep anything alive…

office

Wahoo! And I actually have an office now! No more working from the kitchen table, haha. I did order a chair too, which is supposed to come today.

And my second and third purchases for the home were my T. Rex planter and a zero maintenance flower terrarium, haha. I can have a plant that requires no maintenance AND it’s alive! How about that?

And holy moly! We are super excited about our master bathroom! Double vanities are the key to a successful marriage in my opinion, haha. And everyone’s favorite part of the house so far is our shower…

bathroom

But my favorite part is that walk-in closet! I still have some work to do for unpacking and organizing. But I seriously feel as though I died and went to heaven with this closet!

walk-in closet

And finally! I have my own washer and dryer! I’m so excited! I like that the laundry room is connected to the master closet as well. I’ll be far more likely to put my clothes away now, instead of letting them sit in a laundry basket once I’m done folding them.

My husband has big plans for our basement. He is all about home entertainment.

And I’m pretty excited about the wine refrigerator we have down there! I can start a wine collection! Haha.

We still have to put a lawn in and do some landscaping, but we can sit on our porch and watch the world go by.  I love that it’s covered and has a fan as well. (The tin on top is from an old barn in Shiocton, Wisconsin – which is my hometown!)

Now, before I end this post, I want to give a big shoutout to our families for being there for us while we moved around the world. From my parents for taking us in when we had nowhere to go, to my husband’s grandparents for storing our things in their basement – without everyone’s help, we never would’ve been able to have these experiences. And a big thank you to our families, again, for helping us get situated in our new home. We have no idea what we’re doing, haha. Thank you to Dave and my mom for helping us through that first day of figuring things out and assembling things (and for bringing over all of your decorations)! And my mother and father in law for bringing us food and other household things we didn’t realize we needed! And grandma and grandpa for also making us several meals, which kept us from starving while we unpacked! It’s been a heck of a week and we really appreciate everyone! Love you guys!

Thank you, also, to Mark Hilgenberg – our buyer. He helped us through this whole crazy house buying experience. If you’re looking to buy a home, go with Mark!

Wow! Still can’t believe this is ours!

I realized I didn’t take a photo of every single spot/room in our home as I’m going through these photos. I’ll have to save that for another day! Feel free to check out the rest of the photos of the home, below, and click on any to make them full-sized.

  4. What a fantastic house! Congratulations!! We moved into our new house in February but with 4 kids we actually had to get rid of decorations and things we had accumulated over the years. But sure is fun to have a new space to live in and make our own. We just returned from 3 weeks in the republic of Georgia and 3 weeks of living out of suitcases with 4 kids was just long enough to see a lot of the country before coming back to the comfort of our home! Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures!

Thank you so much, Mireille! And oh my gosh – how cool you spent 3 weeks in the Republic of Georgia! But it’s always nice to have a place to come home to – I completely agree. 🙂

Oh my goodness first off congrats! Your home is absolutely beautiful. What an exciting time for you two. Second off I am seriously so jealous of that closet. It is amazing!I cannot wait to see your home all decorated. I know it will look amazing and you’ll have so much fun. It takes time, but will come together before you know it. Our house is pretty empty too, but it is so rewarding as you get one room done. Also, I am so glad you have so much family support. My hubby’s family and mine have both been so incredible and helpful for us too. I don’t think we could’ve done it alone.

Thank you so much, Courtney! I hope all is going well with your move too! That’s wonderful your parents and in-laws were also able to help you too. There’s no way we could’ve done this on our own either.
