10 Cities That Impressed Travelers Way More Than Expected in 2025
A new study reveals which destinations left visitors pleasantly surprised this year.
Travel isn’t always predictable. Sometimes the destinations we expect the least end up impressing us the most.
The 2025 Paris Syndrome Report analyzed 97,409 Google reviews from the 10 most-visited attractions in 100 major cities worldwide. Researchers looked for negative and positive keywords to determine which places were most likely to disappoint, and which ones truly outshined expectations.
These 10 cities had the lowest share of negative reviews, making them the world’s most pleasantly surprising destinations this year. Let’s take a look!

10. Delhi, India (tie)
Delhi often intimidates first-time visitors with its sheer size, crowds, and chaotic traffic. Yet travelers found themselves won over by the city’s energy, ancient sites like Humayun’s Tomb, and the cultural depth woven into every neighborhood. Many expected frustration, but instead walked away with vivid memories of incredible food, bustling markets, and warm hospitality.

10. Mecca, Saudi Arabia (tie)
Mecca is unique in that it is open only to Muslim travelers making the pilgrimage, so expectations are already layered with spiritual meaning. Even so, visitors reported being deeply moved by the scale, atmosphere, and organization of the holy city. For those able to go, Mecca proved not only meaningful but also smoother and more welcoming than anticipated.

10. Guilin, China (tie)
Guilin has long been associated with postcard views of its limestone karst peaks and winding rivers, but travelers didn’t expect just how stunning it would feel in person. River cruises through the dramatic landscape exceeded nearly everyone’s expectations. The fact that only 2.5% of reviews contained negative mentions shows how consistently Guilin delivers on its natural beauty.

9. Shenzhen, China
Shenzhen’s reputation as a tech hub had many visitors bracing for a sterile, business-first city. Instead, they discovered vibrant art districts, modern theme parks, and green spaces that broke up the skyline. Reviews pointed out that it’s a city with surprising character, proving that modern development doesn’t have to come at the cost of charm.

8. Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn charmed travelers with its storybook Old Town, medieval towers, and cobbled streets. Many expected a sleepy Baltic capital but instead found a lively cultural scene, hip cafés, and digital-forward conveniences. The blend of historic and modern made Tallinn a standout, with visitors leaving far more impressed than they arrived.

7. Santiago, Chile
Santiago had a reputation for being a stopover city, but reviews showed it’s much more than that. Framed by the Andes on one side and the Pacific on the other, the city offered dramatic scenery in addition to urban life. Add in wineries, thriving neighborhoods, and a growing culinary reputation, and Santiago turned skeptics into fans.

6. Vilnius, Lithuania
Vilnius flew under the radar compared to better-known European destinations, but travelers were pleasantly surprised by its vibrant charm. Baroque architecture and a bohemian spirit made the capital feel fresh and approachable. Visitors also appreciated its affordability, proving that big experiences don’t always come with big price tags.

5. Sapporo, Japan
Sapporo is often known only for its beer brand and annual snow festival, but travelers found the city had plenty more to offer. Surrounded by mountains and hot springs, it gave them an easy balance between city life and outdoor adventure. The warmth of the local culture and the abundance of great food helped it exceed expectations.

4. Zhuhai, China
Zhuhai often sits in the shadow of its glitzy neighbor Macau, so many didn’t expect much. Instead, they discovered laid-back beaches, lush parks, and scenic coastal views. Its slower pace and authenticity contrasted nicely with the high energy of nearby cities, making Zhuhai a pleasant surprise.

3. Muscat, Oman
Muscat stunned visitors with its unique mix of desert, mountains, and turquoise waters. Tourists expected a quick stop but ended up praising its souks, mosques, and welcoming people. The city proved that Oman’s capital can hold its own against much bigger names in the region.

2. Lima, Peru
For many, Lima was just a layover before heading to Machu Picchu. Yet the Peruvian capital blew visitors away with its thriving food scene, cliffside views, and a mix of colonial and modern architecture. The fact that it ranked as the second least-disappointing city worldwide shows that Lima is finally getting the recognition it deserves. (See even more fun things to do in Peru, below!)

1. Guangzhou, China
Guangzhou earned the crown as the world’s most pleasantly surprising city, with only 0.8% of reviews mentioning disappointment. Tourists praised its Cantonese cuisine, efficient infrastructure, and blend of tradition with modern skyscrapers. Expectations may have been modest, but Guangzhou left visitors feeling like they got more than they bargained for in the best way.
