The Happy City Index evaluates hundreds of cities around the globe on factors like governance, public health, green spaces, cultural vibrancy, mobility, environmental quality, and economic stability — all the things that make daily life more enjoyable.

Only two U.S. cities — New York City and Minneapolis — earned a coveted spot in the “gold” tier, meaning most of the top contenders are overseas. From Scandinavia to Southeast Asia, these 12 standouts are worth adding to your move-or-visit list.

12. Vienna, Austria

Vienna’s charm goes far beyond its stunning architecture and rich cultural scene. The city offers a high standard of living, efficient public transport, and plenty of green spaces. It’s consistently ranked as one of the most livable cities in the world, with an emphasis on sustainability and community well-being.
