I Tried the Herbishh Color Shampoo at Home — Here’s What It Did to My Greys

Herbishh before and after

I avoided coloring my own hair for years because teenage-me absolutely wrecked it once, and the trauma stuck with me far longer than it should’ve. I swore off DIY color after that… until I tried the Herbishh Color Shampoo a couple of years ago.

Since then, I’ve actually gotten comfortable coloring my hair at home. It’s quick, it’s low-stress, and it keeps my greys from screaming at me every morning. For this review, I used the Dark Coffee Brown shade, which is one I hadn’t tested before.

Herbishh also sent over their updated packaging for this shampoo, and since I already use (and like!) their thickening shampoo and conditioner, I agreed to try it out and share my thoughts.

And yes, this post is sponsored by Herbishh. But let me be very clear: that does not buy a glowing review. I’ve bought these products with my own money for years, and nothing about a sponsorship changes how honest I am. If you’ve ever read my brutally honest review of Sandals Resorts (the one that got me kicked out of their affiliate program), you already know I don’t sugarcoat things. I’m certainly not risking your trust over a $40 color shampoo.

We all work hard for our money, and nobody deserves to waste it on products that don’t do what they promise. So everything below is my real experience with the Herbishh Color Shampoo.

Now, let’s talk hair.

My natural hair color - hate it!

My Hair Type and Why I Use Herbishh Color Shampoo

I have fine, thin hair that is naturally more ashy in color. I hate it! And now that I am getting older, I have my fair share of greys. Yay! I also wash my hair every single day because I exercise on a regular basis and just can’t stand having sweaty, greasy hair after the gym.

So I use this color shampoo to cover greys and add a bit of shine back into my over-washed hair. It makes my hair look healthier… but it’s never a super dramatic change.

What’s New (and What’s Not) with Herbishh Color Shampoo

Just so expectations are clear — this isn’t a new formula. What is new is the packaging, which is sturdier and has a way better little pump and pump cover than the old bottle, and I’m testing the shade ‘Dark Coffee’ today, which I’ve never tried.

Application of Herbishh Color Shampoo

The application is super simple.

You’re supposed to apply it on dry hair. Mine is clean today, but I’ve also used it when my hair needs a wash, and it works the same.

The gloves that come with the dye kit.
The gloves that come with the dye kit.

I put on the gloves it comes with, then work it in like a regular shampoo — mainly focusing on my part and roots.

Before applying, I make sure to shake the bottle really well. The pigment can settle, especially if the bottle’s been sitting for a bit, and shaking it helps everything distribute evenly so the color applies consistently.

Also worth noting that this doesn’t lather like a normal shampoo. If you see very little foam, or notice excess color rinsing out in the shower, that’s completely normal. This is a color-depositing formula, so it behaves more like a treatment than a traditional cleanser.

Quick tips for this: the only time I’ve gotten any scalp staining is when I used way too much product at once. If you take your time and don’t overdo it, it rinses clean. Also, be sure to wear dark clothes and take your watch off. Even with the gloves on, I’ve managed to dye my watch strap by accident in the past. Just take it off.

Dying my hair with Herbishh Color Shampoo!

Once I’ve got it all worked in, I let the color sit for about 20 minutes, then jump in the shower and rinse it out really well with water — no shampoo. After that, I use the Herbishh hair mask so my hair feels nice and soft. It comes with this packet, and I can get about 4 uses out of it before it runs out. If you do run out because you have more hair than me, they do sell this mask on their site, which is great and lasts me for forever.

Then I blow-dry and straighten it. I didn’t use any additional products today, so nothing interferes with the before-and-after.

Before & After + Honest Thoughts

Okay, here’s the before — my greys always come in fast, and my natural color gets dull pretty quickly. So this is what I was working with.

Here’s after using the Dark Coffee shade. It looks really natural on me, not harsh or inky, and isn’t too far from my natural color. And the greys are pretty much gone.

For me, the Black shade lasts about three weeks before I notice roots again or feel like it starts to fade. This is my before and after using that color.

But that shade I felt was a little harsh and too inky for me, so I have been using the Dark Brown until today.

This shade fades faster — about a week or two on my hair before I want to redye it. And again, I wash my hair daily, so that makes a difference.

I’m curious to see where Dark Coffee lands, but so far I really like the tone. I expect I’ll probably need to do it again in another one or two weeks.

And again — no weird scalp line, which is honestly my number one pet peeve with salon dyes. Makes me crazy!

Who This Works For (And Doesn’t)

If you want quick root coverage or you’re trying to refresh your color without a full salon appointment, this is a great option.

If you want to go lighter or do anything super dramatic… this isn’t the product. Stick with a professional for that!

If I ever go blonde again – I’ll let a professional do that lol.

But if you’re like me — with some frizz, and greys that show up aggressively early — a color shampoo is a really simple way to keep things looking fresh between salon visits or as a great way to skip the salon altogether!

Price + My Experience

The full bottle is about $40, and because I don’t have a ton of hair, I get multiple uses out of one bottle, like 5 or 6 uses at least. Salon visits for me are usually over $200 just for color, so this definitely stretches things.

If you want to try this Herbishh color shampoo, use my code HCWT for 10% off on the Herbishh site. It’s also available on Amazon but the coupon won’t work there.

Ordering from the site is also nice because they occasionally give free gifts with your order. Like I got a brush for free when I stocked up on my thickening shampoo and conditioner over the summer – and it’s a really nice brush. So I would check out their site over Amazon if you want a discount and some fun perks.
