New Analysis Says These Are the Worst Days to Fly This Spring — and Easter May Be More Stressful Than Christmas

A record number of travelers are expected to fly this spring, and a new analysis suggests some late-March and early-April dates could be especially rough.

If flying has felt a little chaotic lately, it’s not your imagination. Airlines for America says U.S. airlines expect to carry 171 million passengers between March 1 and April 30, or about 2.8 million travelers a day, which would make this one of the busiest spring travel periods on record.

That is exactly why a new analysis from HelloMillions caught my attention. The company reviewed all 366 calendar dates and ranked the most stressful days to fly based on delays, cancellations, and other disruption data. For travelers heading out around Easter, the findings are not exactly comforting.

Easter falls on April 5, 2026, and according to the analysis, several of the worst spring travel dates land right before it.

The end of March looks especially messy

According to the HelloMillions analysis, March 31 ranks among the most stressful travel days of the year, with a stress score of 8.71 out of 10.

It is not alone. March 30 also scored high at 8.48, while April 1 and April 2 were not far behind. The report found elevated delay rates across those dates, along with unusually high cancellation rates at the end of March and start of April.

For anyone flying during that stretch, this is the part of the calendar I would watch most closely.

Easter may actually be more stressful than Christmas

That was probably the most interesting stat in the whole release.

HelloMillions found that Easter scored 7.62 out of 10 on its travel stress scale, narrowly edging out Christmas at 7.57. The analysis says Easter also had a much higher cancellation rate, with about 5.75% of flights canceled, compared to 2.69% at Christmas.

Most people probably assume Christmas is the more chaotic holiday to fly, and in some ways it still is. But this data suggests Easter travel can be a lot rougher than people expect, particularly when cancellations pile up.

Why spring travel can go sideways so fast

One thing that stood out in the data is how much spring travel can be thrown off by weather and operational delays.

HelloMillions found that some of the worst spring dates saw long average weather delays, late-aircraft delays, and departure delays all stacking up at once. That is usually when airports start to feel especially miserable, because the problem is no longer just your flight. It is every delayed plane before yours, every crew adjustment, and every gate area filling up with irritated people.

With so many travelers already expected this spring, it does not take much for the whole system to start feeling strained. Airlines for America says carriers are adding about 2% more flights and seats this season, with roughly 26,000 daily flights and 3.5 million seats available, but busy periods can still get messy fast.

A therapist’s tips for keeping airport anxiety in check

To go with the flight data, HelloMillions also shared advice from Niloufar Esmaeilpour, a clinical counsellor at Lotus Therapy, on dealing with airport anxiety.

Her advice is practical. Arrive early, check in ahead of time, keep your documents easy to reach, and stay on top of flight updates so you feel informed instead of blindsided.

She also recommends holding onto small routines from home, which makes sense. Something as simple as grabbing your usual coffee, listening to a familiar podcast, or having a book downloaded before you leave can make an airport feel a little less overstimulating.

For people who get really anxious while traveling, she also suggests a simple breathing exercise: inhale for four counts and exhale for six. Grounding techniques, like the 5-4-3-2-1 method, can also help pull your focus out of the general airport chaos and back into the present moment.

The dates travelers may want to avoid

Based on the HelloMillions analysis, the spring dates that look especially stressful include:

  • March 30
  • March 31
  • April 1
  • April 2
  • April 14

The report also flagged several mid-June dates as extremely stressful, though for readers planning spring break or Easter trips, the late-March and early-April stretch is the more immediate concern.

If you are flying soon, this is probably not the year to cut it close, assume your connection will be fine, or show up at the airport with zero margin for error!

Spring travel is shaping up to be very busy, and this new analysis suggests the days around the end of March and start of April could be especially frustrating. If your plans are flexible, it may be worth avoiding that window. If they are not, I would go in prepared for lines, delays, and at least a little test of patience.
