New Survey Reveals Why So Many Americans Keep Returning to the Same Vacation Spots

New data reveals the emotional — and practical — reasons travelers are embracing “repeat destinations.”

There’s something about a familiar beach chair, your favorite dinner spot, and the same sunrise you’ve watched a dozen times before. According to new data, many Americans aren’t chasing novelty on vacation; they’re chasing comfort.

A new Talker Research survey of 2,000 U.S. travelers, conducted on behalf of Apple Vacations, found that one in three Americans (30%) return to the same vacation destination year after year. For these “repeat travelers,” the appeal goes far beyond convenience… It’s emotional. Sixty-five percent said they feel like locals in their favorite getaway spots, forming real connections with the community.

“One reason people go back to the same destinations is because travelers know exactly what awaits them,” said Dana Studebaker, Vice President of Marketing, Consumer Brands at Apple Vacations. “Much like the reassurance of an all-inclusive resort, where every detail is cared for, they can count on their favorite dinners, preferred amenities, and the simple joy of knowing their experience will be just as special every time.”

Familiarity vs. Novelty

The study found a clear divide between travelers who crave routine and those who crave discovery. Beachgoers (35%) and theme park visitors (20%) are the most loyal repeat travelers, while road trippers (26%) tend to branch out and explore new places.

Still, most people like to keep things balanced. More than half (54%) said they mix old favorites with new adventures. Meanwhile, a quarter of respondents lean strongly toward loyalty, with 10% always returning to the same spot, and 15% often doing so. On average, these repeat visitors have been back about five times, turning a single vacation into a long-term tradition.

Why We Go Back

So what is the top motivator? Familiarity and comfort (52%), but it’s not the only one. Scenery (40%), traditions with family or friends (40%), and local food (40%) are equally powerful draws. Others cited affordability (39%) and ease of planning (35%).

Returning somewhere known can also save money. Travelers spend an average of $1,854 revisiting a destination, compared to $2,016 when heading somewhere new. Nearly seven in 10 agreed they tend to spend more when exploring new territory.

The Pull of Nostalgia

Nostalgia also plays a big role. Nearly half of parents (49%) have taken their kids to a place that meant something to them growing up. Among them, 39% wanted their children to experience a place they loved, and 37% wanted to relive happy memories.

And the cycle continues: 54% of Americans expect to return to a familiar destination in the next year. When asked which childhood spot they’d most like to revisit, the beach topped the list (26%), followed by theme parks (15%) and family-tradition cities (11%).

“Returning to familiar destinations is not a trend, but a building block that will continue to create special memories for travelers for years to come,” said Michael Lowery, Head of Global Consumer Brands at Apple Vacations. “Maybe it’s parents showing their kids the Caribbean resort where they honeymooned, or a family celebrating another reunion at grandma’s house. Every trip layers on new memories, turning that destination into a part of the family tradition.”

Whether it’s a favorite island, a quiet mountain town, or a local lake where generations have gathered, returning to the same place year after year reminds us that sometimes the best adventures are the ones we already know by heart.
