Forget TikTok Travel Trends — Here’s What’s Actually Inspiring Trips in 2026

Travel trends are everywhere right now.
One week, it’s “luxury train hopping.” The next is “set-jetting” to period drama filming locations or planning an astrology-themed cruise.
But one thing is clear. Americans are traveling differently in 2026, and according to a new survey, most travelers aren’t actually booking trips just because they went viral online. Instead, people seem to be focusing on something much simpler: how a trip makes them feel.
A survey of 2,000 frequent American travelers found that while social media still inspires plenty of vacation ideas, emotional connection, comfort, curiosity, and value are playing a much bigger role in where people actually choose to go.
Here are some of the biggest takeaways from the survey.
1. Travelers Want Trips That Feel Comfortable

The biggest emotional motivator wasn’t luxury or status.
More than a third of respondents (35%) said they’re looking for vacations that feel “ready and comfortable.”
That could mean:
- Familiar destinations
- Relaxing resorts
- Easy itineraries
- Stress-free experiences
- Places that simply feel calming
After years of chaotic travel headlines and packed itineraries, people may just want vacations that feel easy again.
2. Excitement Still Matters Too

At the same time, travelers don’t want trips to feel boring.
About 31% or respondents said they’re prioritizing vacations that feel exciting, while 28% simply want an escape from everyday life.
The interesting part is that excitement now seems less tied to “bucket-list bragging rights” and more tied to personal enjoyment.
It’s less: “Will this impress people online?”
And more: “Will I actually enjoy myself here?”
3. Curiosity Is the Biggest Driver Overall

When people were asked what motivates them most when choosing where to travel, curiosity and learning came out on top at 44%.
That beat:
- Comfort and familiarity (38%)
- Personal growth (29%)
- Creativity and inspiration (29%)
- Self-discovery (29%)
In other words, people still want adventure. They just want it to feel meaningful.
4. Instagram Is Inspiring Trips… But Also Disappointing People

While 51% of respondents said they’ve planned a trip inspired by a viral travel trend, only 21% said those trips always lived up to expectations. Some travelers have even called out the cities that disappointed them most.
Even more telling?
Nearly 60% admitted they’ve arrived somewhere that looked better online than it did in real life.
This explains why so many travelers seem to be shifting away from purely “Instagrammable” vacations, returning to experiences similar to those had by people who traveled before Instagram.
5. Cost and Value Are Still the Biggest Priorities

No matter how trendy a destination becomes, price still matters.
When choosing where to travel next, respondents ranked:
- Cost and value (23%)
- Cultural interest (15%)
- Emotional connection (15%)
Meanwhile, only 5% said social media trends were the primary thing influencing their decisions. That’s a pretty major shift from the “travel for content” era.
6. “Bleisure” Travel Is Becoming Normal

The most common trend people actually tried was “bleisure travel,” which is simply extending a work trip into a personal vacation.
About 37% of travelers said they’ve done it.
If you’re already paying for the flight, adding a few extra days suddenly feels a lot more appealing and a lot less expensive than traveling somewhere else separately.
7. Heritage and Family Travel Are Growing

Some of the more meaningful trends on the list included:
- Ancestry or heritage travel (27%)
- Multigenerational family trips (18%)
Instead of chasing whatever destination is trending this month, many travelers seem more interested in experiences tied to:
- Family history
- Personal identity
- Shared memories
- Spending time together
That shift toward emotional connection showed up throughout the entire survey.
8. Grocery Store Tourism Is Apparently a Real Thing

One of the more unexpected trends? “Grocery store tourism.”
About 15% of respondents said they’ve explored grocery stores while traveling.
Honestly, though… this feels understandable. Foreign grocery stores become one of the fastest ways to understand:
- Local culture
- Everyday life
- Food trends
- Regional snacks
- What people actually eat
And yes, many travelers absolutely leave with an entire suitcase full of snacks.
9. Some Viral Travel Trends Still Aren’t Catching On

Not every social media trend is translating into real-world popularity.
Only:
- 11% tried “cowboy core” vacations
- 11% did film or TV “set-jetting”
- 7% tried astrology-themed trips
These statistics reinforce the overall message here: People may enjoy watching travel trends online… but that doesn’t necessarily mean they want to spend money on them.
10. The Biggest Travel Trend of 2026 Might Actually Be Intentionality
More than anything, this survey suggests travelers are becoming more thoughtful about why they travel.
According to Apple Vacations VP Dana Studebaker: “People want trips that feel good — not just ones that look good.”
Instead of chasing aesthetics, travelers seem more focused on:
- Connection
- Comfort
- Curiosity
- Meaningful experiences
- Emotional memories
