Could Your State Rival the World’s Biggest Economies?

Fresh GDP data reveals which states would rank among the top economies if they were independent nations.

The United States may be the world’s largest economy, but when you zoom in on the states, the numbers get even wilder. Some U.S. states produce so much wealth that, if they were their own countries, they’d outrank major global economies.

A new analysis by Gold IRA Custodians compared 2024 GDP data for all 50 states to the GDP of countries worldwide. Here’s how the top 10 stack up — starting with #10.

#10. New Jersey – GDP: $846.6 billion

New Jersey’s economy is roughly the same size as Poland’s ($844.6 billion), putting it on par with a country ranked 21st in the world by GDP. Despite being one of the smallest states geographically, New Jersey’s mix of pharmaceuticals, finance, and manufacturing gives it outsized economic power.

#9. Washington – GDP: $854.7 billion

Matching Poland’s GDP, Washington is more than just coffee shops and tech giants. The state’s economy is powered by heavy hitters like Microsoft, Amazon, and Boeing — making it a global contender in both technology and aerospace manufacturing.

#8. Georgia – GDP: $882.5 billion

Georgia’s economy is also comparable to Poland’s, but it edges out Washington and New Jersey in total GDP. Atlanta serves as a transportation and logistics hub, while industries like film production and fintech are rapidly expanding its economic footprint.

#7. Ohio – GDP: $927.7 billion

Ohio’s economy rivals Switzerland’s ($938.5 billion) — and Switzerland isn’t exactly a lightweight on the global stage. With strengths in manufacturing, healthcare, and financial services, Ohio quietly punches far above its weight in the world economy.

#6. Pennsylvania – GDP: $1.02 trillion

If Pennsylvania were a country, it would sit just behind Saudi Arabia in GDP rankings. Energy production, manufacturing, and a strong financial sector keep the Keystone State in the trillion-dollar club.

#5. Illinois – GDP: $1.14 trillion

Illinois ties the Netherlands for GDP, a country ranked 17th globally. Chicago’s financial markets, coupled with Illinois’ manufacturing and agriculture, make it an economic powerhouse — even if the state has its share of fiscal challenges.

#4. Florida – GDP: $1.71 trillion

Florida’s economy matches Australia’s and surpasses heavy hitters like South Korea and Spain. Beyond beaches and theme parks, Florida has growing tech, aerospace, and agricultural industries that help keep it in the top tier.

#3. New York – GDP: $2.30 trillion

If New York were independent, it would be the 10th-largest economy in the world — tied with Canada. Wall Street drives a huge chunk of that GDP, but tourism, media, and international trade all play a role in its massive output.

#2. Texas – GDP: $2.71 trillion

Texas also rivals Canada in GDP but edges out New York with its energy, tech, and manufacturing sectors. On a global scale, Texas outproduces countries like Brazil and Italy — making it one of the most influential regional economies anywhere.

#1. California – GDP: $4.10 trillion

California would be the world’s fourth-largest economy, nearly identical to Japan’s GDP — and bigger than India, the UK, or France. From Silicon Valley’s tech giants to Hollywood’s entertainment empire and the state’s massive agriculture industry, California’s output surpasses or matches 17 G20 countries.

These rankings make it clear: the U.S. isn’t just one economic giant — it’s a collection of regional powerhouses, each capable of competing with entire nations. And while economic strength can shape everything from job markets to quality of life, it’s only part of the bigger picture.
