Travelers Reveal Their 10 Most Jaw-dropping Adventures
AUTHOR: Chisom Umeh
The spirit of adventure is one of the few things that make life fun. When it takes hold of you, you yearn to get more out of life. We want to get lost in the unknown beauties of this world. Many times, this comes in the form of wanderlust: The sense that the greater world out there is calling to us, seeking us out, and we must meet it. If you have the money or have been saving, you can simply take a flight to a different country, another state, or some different continent and just enjoy your time.
Some might even argue that merely getting out of bed every morning and entering the world is an adventure. But that can easily become mundane and monotonous. We need to step out of everyday experience to view life anew. Here are just a few experiences that might spark a hidden wanderlust in you.
1. Nazca Lines
One user said they had a wonderful experience when they took a small plane in Peru to see the Nazca lines. They say that so far, that has really been a highlight of their travels. They also got to see a pod of whales bubble-feeding in Juneau. The whales were so close the user could smell them.
2. Drunk in the Mountain
This user once got drunk with mineworkers deep inside the “Mountain That Eats Men Alive” in Bolivia. They stayed there for over seven hours while the tour was supposed to last just over an hour. They also saw a jaguar and played football on a riverbank with many indigenous kids in the middle of the Amazon. The sun was also setting at that moment, and while parrots flew overhead, dolphins jumped around in the water around them. It was a beautiful sight to behold, according to the traveler.
3. Birthing Across Continents
This user said she got pregnant and had a baby in two foreign countries. She got pregnant in Honduras and spent her first trimester there; the second was split between Mexico and China, and the third was between China and Thailand.
4. Sunset in Western Europe
There was a time when a user ran to the westernmost point of mainland Europe to catch the most surreal landscape of their entire life. The gist of the story, according to them, is that they took a massive risk to do something they really wanted to do, and it paid off better than they could have ever imagined.
5. Convergence of Cultures
At 15, a short-term foreign exchange student in Vienna, Austria, took a weekend trip to Salzburg and stayed in a hostel. He and his friend separated from the group and sat around a fire until about 3 a.m. Throughout the night, they talked to or attempted to talk, to people from several countries who came and went from the fire. They had never experienced so much culture in one spot in all their lives. At some point, some girls from the Czech Republic came out and demanded he play Kurt Cobain on the guitar. So he played “Smells Like Teen Spirit” while his friend sang.
6. Oktoberfest
Posted up with one of her best friends at the Hofbrauhaus bar in downtown Munich during Oktoberfest, a user had an amazing time. They were there from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. They met a group of British guys and two separate groups of Italians. They played many drinking games, shared life stories, and drank an amazing amount of beer.
7. Visiting
A user once visited their father’s cousins in Germany in 2014. It was the first time they were meeting their cousins who, being older, had fond memories of their grandparents whom the user barely remembered. In the house of one of the cousins, a dollhouse was on the wall. In that dollhouse, there were tiny family photos on the walls. In one of the photos, a young man was holding a baby. The young man was the user’s father. The baby was the user. It was an exhilarating experience finding their photo on the wall of a German woman they had never met before.
8. Football
One user wandered the streets of Barcelona only to find a small football (soccer for Americans) match going on behind the city. They decided to sit down and enjoy themselves while they ate some churros. Now, every time they ate churros, they think of Barcelona.
9. Trekking in the Himalayas
This user says that Annapurna Base Camp is one of the most amazing places they have ever visited. Their seven-day hike there made it even more special.
10. Saw It All
This user had the perfect day while bush camping in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. They walked the safari and crossed the Delta in wooden boats. A six-foot cobra, elephants, zebras, hippos, and wildebeest all popped up for them to see. Their guide had nothing more than a knife for protection. The day ended while they watched the sunset by a campfire and sang.
