The good news? WalletHub just dropped a fresh report ranking 100 of the biggest U.S. metro areas to uncover the most affordable and entertaining destinations to visit right now.

They crunched 41 key indicators, from the cost of the cheapest flights to how many attractions are in the area, plus dining prices and more. So, if you want to make your summer travel dreams a reality without draining your wallet, here are the top 12 U.S. destinations offering the best bang for your buck, starting with #12 and working our way to the top spot.

12. Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL

Florida in summer? Yes, it’s hot. But also hot: Tampa’s budget-friendly appeal. This metro area scored high thanks to its affordable airfare and a wide range of things to do, especially for families and beach lovers.

From lounging on the sugary sands of Clearwater Beach to exploring the Florida Aquarium or even catching a baseball game at Tropicana Field, Tampa is a great combo of chill and fun without the Disney-level prices.

If you’ve never considered Knoxville for a summer vacation, this is your sign. Nestled between the Great Smoky Mountains and vibrant downtown energy, Knoxville blends nature, history, and affordability.

Think: Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the world’s best soft pretzels. Add in walkability, solid public transit, and a food scene that spans from cheesesteaks to James Beard winners, and you’ve got a destination that delivers more than just historical value.

7. Salt Lake City, UT

If mountains, lakes, and jaw-dropping landscapes are your thing, Salt Lake City is calling. WalletHub ranked it highly thanks to low travel costs and its sheer number of outdoor activities.

Summer is prime time for hiking, mountain biking, or heading to nearby Antelope Island for wildlife spotting. The city itself is clean, friendly, and surprisingly artsy. Bonus: the dry climate makes the heat feel more manageable.

Cincinnati is having a moment—and it’s one of the most budget-friendly destinations on the list. WalletHub found that the Queen City shines when it comes to low meal prices and hotel rates.
