These 10 Trips Are Even Better in September

Summer gets all the glory, but September is secretly one of the best months to travel. Flights and hotels are cheaper after Labor Day (AAA even reported airfare drops of around 6% this time of year), the summer crowds finally thin, and the weather is still incredible in so many parts of the world.

It’s that sweet spot between peak season and the chill of fall, a time when you can stretch your money further and actually enjoy the destinations you’re visiting.

From golden foliage road trips in the U.S. to sun-soaked Mediterranean islands, here are ten smart September getaways worth doing.

10. Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is one of those destinations that suddenly makes sense in September. Flights and hotels are cheaper, beaches are still gorgeous, and Old San Juan has plenty of charm without peak-season chaos. Yes, it’s hurricane season, but if you keep an eye on the forecast you can score incredible deals and sunny days for a fraction of what you’d pay in summer.

9. Mongolia

September in Mongolia is crisp and golden—the kind of weather that makes trekking across endless steppe actually enjoyable. It’s also festival season, with the Eagle Festival giving travelers a front-row seat to centuries-old Kazakh traditions. Days are warm, nights are cool, and you get all those wide-open landscapes without the midsummer tourist rush.

8. Uganda

Uganda shines in September. Temperatures are pleasant, the jacaranda trees are starting to bloom, and safari crowds are thinner. It’s also a prime time for gorilla trekking and spotting wildlife without a dozen other safari jeeps crowding your view. Safari operators even note that prices dip compared to the busiest months, which makes September an all-around win.

7. Yellowstone National Park, USA

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing Yellowstone without bumper-to-bumper traffic, September is your month. The crowds are gone, but the bison and elk are still out in full force—and the sound of elk bugling through the valleys is unforgettable. Hikes are cooler, the first hints of fall color show up, and it’s just a calmer, more magical version of the park.

6. Turkey

Turkey in September really has it all. Istanbul is buzzing but not sweltering, the southern coast is still warm enough for lazy beach days, and Cappadocia is at its most magical, with clear skies for sunrise balloon rides and cool evenings for wandering the valleys. It’s the perfect balance of culture, scenery, and shoulder-season calm. You’ll save on hotel rates compared to midsummer, and you won’t be elbow-to-elbow at the big sights. I have several guides on Cappadocia if you’re looking for more details, because honestly, this region is worth the trip on its own.

5. Greece (Athens • Meteora • Islands)

I may be biased here, but Greece in September is one of the best trips you can take. The water is still warm enough for swimming, tavernas on the islands are lively but not packed, and mainland gems like Meteora finally feel peaceful. I put together a 10-day Athens–Meteora–Islands itinerary that shows exactly how much you can experience without feeling rushed. AAA even highlights Athens as one of the top September international spots thanks to lower airfares and easing crowds, so it’s not just me saying it!

4. Jackson Hole, Wyoming

September is when Jackson Hole feels like it belongs to the elk. The bugling season is in full swing, trails in Grand Teton National Park are crisp and quiet, and hotel prices finally dip from their summer highs. You can still catch warm afternoons for fishing or scenic drives, but you’ll also get those golden mornings that make the Tetons feel extra dramatic.

3. Bali, Indonesia

Bali’s dry season wraps up in September, which means lots of sunshine, low humidity, and way fewer crowds than you’ll find in July and August. Resorts and villas often drop their rates, and you can explore temples or hit the beaches without the high-season frenzy. It’s one of those months where Bali feels both lively and laid-back.

2. Amalfi Coast, Italy

September is Amalfi at its best. The ferries are easy to book, restaurants don’t feel impossible, and the weather is still warm enough to linger on a terrace with limoncello. Hotel rates drop compared to August, and the whole coast just feels calmer and more authentic once summer vacationers leave.

1. New England, USA

Early fall in New England is pure magic. Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire start showing those first pops of color, the air turns crisp, and towns that felt slammed in July suddenly feel relaxed. Searches for fall foliage travel are already up nearly 30% this year, which shows I’m not the only one who thinks September is the best time to visit. A road trip through this region right now feels both classic and smart.

September is one of those months that rewards you for waiting; it’s cheaper, calmer, and in many places, even more beautiful. Whether you’re eyeing fall foliage in New England or island-hopping in Greece, this is the time to go. And if you’re looking for more inspiration, I also put together my Meteora travel guide and a post on the best things to do in Door County, Wisconsin—my favorite fall getaway close to home.
